Chapter 24 - I got your back!

Chapter 24

After absorbing the crystal and increasing his Earth magic affinity, Grey called for Randin. When he reached Randin's position, the dwarf warned him about attracting unwanted attention.

Right on cue, a group of goblins attacked. Grey prepared to charge forward, but Randin quickly cautioned him.

"Before you go, don't destroy their weapons. I need to examine them later," Randin warned.

"Wasn't planning on it!" Grey replied, propelling himself forward with wind magic.

Two goblins fired continuous streams of lightning at him. Grey swiftly raised his hands.

"Earth Wall!" he called out, summoning a thick barrier that blocked the attack.

'Good thing they aren't smart enough to know that lightning is weak against Earth,' he thought with a smirk before dismissing the wall and crashing into the two goblins.

They retaliated with spear thrusts, their tips crackling with lightning. Without hesitation, Grey encased his hand in an Earth gauntlet and grabbed one of the spears. For the second goblin, he shot a small fireball at its head, burning it to a crisp. Twisting his grip, he reshaped the gauntlet into a long spear and impaled the other goblin through the skull.

Before he could recover, five more goblins rushed him while another five charged at Randin.

"Well, this is quite unfair, but who am I to complain?"

Two goblins launched three rapid lightning bolts each. Grey conjured another Earth wall to block them, but one goblin managed to slip through, slashing his side with its spear. The weapon crackled, sending a surge of electricity through his body. His muscles seized, locking him in place. Blood dripped from his wound, his face twitching in pain.

The remaining goblins took the opportunity to attack, their spears glowing as they prepared another round of lightning bolts. Grey, still immobilized, knew he had only one chance.

With sheer willpower, he forced his hand up.

"Aerius!" he roared. A powerful gust of wind erupted from his palm, propelling him away from the spear's tip and narrowly dodging the incoming barrage. The goblins, unable to stop their attack, electrocuted themselves in the process.

Panting heavily, Grey gathered his strength.

"Time to finish this." He raised his hands, an orange glow igniting in his palms.

"Explomb!" A torrent of fire burst forth, engulfing the stunned goblins. Explosions followed, reducing them to charred remains.

Grey collapsed onto one knee, exhaustion washing over him. Turning his gaze to Randin, he saw the dwarf still battling five goblins. His armor was battered, barely holding together. The lightning-infused spears gave him trouble, limiting his movement and defenses.

"I need to recover quickly... or he won't last," Grey muttered, sitting cross-legged to meditate.

As he siphoned mana from the air, a sudden sharp pain shot through his mana core. His chest tightened, his muscles tensed unnaturally.

"Darn it! What is going on? This feels like the time I tried forming my mana core. What is going on? This… this… this pain is excruciating!!!" he gasped, his voice escalating into a scream as his body convulsed uncontrollably. Moments later, he lost consciousness, his body still trembling.

Meanwhile, Randin continued his struggle. Dodging a thrust, he retaliated with a slash, only for a lightning bolt to streak toward his face. He barely managed to block it with his sword, but the impact sent vibrations through his arm.

Then he heard Grey's agonized scream.

A quick glance showed Grey lying unconscious, his body shaking violently.

'Damn it! What happened to him? I need his help, and now he's down!' Randin gritted his teeth, sidestepping an attack before severing a goblin's arm. He drove his knee into the creature's face, sending it sprawling.

Just as he moved to finish it off, another goblin hurled a lightning bolt at his feet, forcing him back. A spear struck his helmet, knocking it off, followed by another lightning strike to his chest. His armor absorbed the impact, but he felt the force through his body.

Swinging his sword in a wide arc, he managed to cut down one goblin. The armless goblin returned for another attack, but Randin swiftly decapitated it, leaving four remaining foes.

Focused on the fight, he barely noticed the next attack—three lightning bolts streaking toward him. With their speed, he knew he wouldn't be able to dodge in time.

Just as the bolts were about to strike, an Earth wall suddenly rose in front of him, blocking the attack completely.

"Don't worry, I've got your back!" a voice shouted.
