Chapter 27 - Earth Trap

Chapter 27

Grey and Randin were on their way to annihilate the entire goblin race when they suddenly encountered a massive, wolf-like beast standing in the forest, staring at Grey with piercing eyes.

Sensing something was off, Grey swiftly activated his appraisal skill to assess the creature. His brows relaxed slightly when he saw that it was merely a level 2 beast on the cusp of evolving to level 3.

"Well, since it's nothing to worry about, let's just kill it and claim some easy—" Grey's words caught in his throat as the beast suddenly vanished from his sight.

"What the—?!" Grey exclaimed, only to find the beast, which had been standing at least four feet away, now directly in front of him, its sharp horn lunging straight for his chest.

Reacting instinctively, Grey cast Aerius, barely evading the attack as the horn thrust into the space he had just occupied. His heart pounded as he wiped a thin layer of sweat from his forehead.

"How the hell did it move so fast?" he muttered.

Randin stepped forward, sword drawn, eyes locked onto the beast. "These creatures are called Jaguars. They're notorious for their speed. Even at low levels, they're among the fastest beasts in existence."

Grey exhaled in relief. "Good thing we didn't run into a higher-level one—"

Before he could finish, the beast vanished again. In the blink of an eye, it was upon Randin, its horn aiming for his chest. But just before it struck, a translucent shield manifested, blocking the attack.

Before Randin could counter, the beast disappeared again, reappearing before Grey in a blur of motion, swiping at him with razor-sharp claws.

Grey instinctively unsheathed his sword and parried the attack, pushing the beast back. But instead of stumbling, the Jaguar used his blade as a foothold, flipping mid-air before landing smoothly on the ground, its fangs bared in frustration.

"Damn, this thing is fast," Grey muttered, gripping his sword tighter.

"Why aren't you using your magic?" Randin asked.

"Because I want to hone my swordsmanship," Grey replied.

As if on cue, the beast darted toward them again. In a flash, it was upon them, its tail whipping around violently. Before Grey could react, the powerful strike sent him hurtling backward, crashing through trees, splintering wood as he tumbled across the ground.

'How is its tail this strong?' he thought as pain flared through his body.

The Jaguar then turned its focus to Randin, lunging with its horn. Randin barely managed to block with his shield before countering with a thrust of his sword. But the beast had already moved, appearing behind him and raking its claws across his back, scratching his armor and pushing him forward.

Randin whirled around, slashing his blade in retaliation, but struck nothing but empty air. A sharp sting seared through his leg as the Jaguar's horn pierced his flesh, drawing blood.

Gritting his teeth, Randin staggered back to create distance. But the beast was relentless, closing the gap in an instant, its tail swinging toward him like a whip. Just as the attack was about to connect, an earthen wall materialized before Randin, absorbing the impact as cracks formed along its surface.

Recognizing the handiwork, Randin turned to see Grey approaching, wiping away a trickle of blood from his lips.

"I swear, why do you beasts always have to target me?" Grey said, stretching his fingers.

Noticing the beast's legs twitching, Grey's eyes narrowed. No, you're not escaping this time.

He clapped his hands together. "Earth Trap!"

The cracked walls before Randin shattered and reformed around the beast's legs, locking them in place. The Jaguar thrashed violently, but the restraints held firm. No matter how hard it struggled, it couldn't break free.

Seeing its helpless state, Grey smirked and walked forward. "You see, Earth Trap is a new spell I picked up. It lets me immobilize any beast weaker than me using the earth itself. Since you're just a level 2, I knew this would hold you easily. If you were level 3 or higher, we'd be screwed because of your insane speed."

The beast let out a furious snarl.

Grey scowled. "Oh, for the love of—would you just shut up?"

He raised his hand, causing chunks of earth to form around the beast's mouth, aiming to silence it. But with a single snap of its powerful jaws, the rocks shattered into dust.

"Oh, you still have some fight left in you?" Grey mused.

"Can we just finish this already?" Randin grumbled.

"Fine." Grey raised his hand, fingers positioned like a makeshift gun, and chanted, "Fire Bullet!"

A concentrated bolt of fire shot toward the Jaguar's head.

But just as the spell was about to land, a sharp sizzling sound erupted behind Grey.

Sensing danger, he turned his head just in time to see a laser-like beam streaking toward him. He jerked sideways, narrowly avoiding a fatal blow. The beam grazed his hair, singeing the tips before continuing forward—

—And piercing straight through the Jaguar's skull.

The beast collapsed instantly, dead before it could even comprehend what had happened.

Grey slowly turned toward the direction of the mysterious attack, his eyes narrowing.

"Alright... What the hell was that?"
