Chapter 30
"I want to become your companion. I want to bind myself to you."
"What do you mean?" Grey asked.
The wolf sighed, its form gradually shrinking to the small, puppy-like size it had earlier. It walked toward Grey and stopped at his feet.
"How can you call yourself a mage and not understand? From our battle, I assumed you had some idea of what I am," the wolf said.
"Clearly, I don't. So why don't you enlighten me?" Grey retorted.
With another sigh, the wolf explained, "I am not a mere beast; I am something far greater—a familiar. We are drawn to mages, which is how I recognized what you are. But we don't just attach ourselves to any mage; we seek those with strength equal to ours. That's why I fought you—to gauge your power. From our battle, I'd say you're at least a three-star mage, if not higher."
Grey scratched his head nervously, though the wolf failed to notice.
"But why are you on my planet? Shouldn't you be in the human world?" Randin interjected.
"Wait, you can hear it too?" Grey asked, surprised.
"Of course. I think it wanted me to hear this conversation as well," Randin shrugged.
"As for your question," the wolf continued, "that's a long story, but I'll simplify it. I once belonged to a mage, but during a catastrophic battle against a group known as the Otherworlders, he perished. I survived, aimlessly wandering this place ever since."
'Otherworlders? Again? Why does their name haunt me everywhere I go?' Grey thought, uneasy.
"Do you know anything about them?" Grey asked.
"Only that they always wore masks. But one thing is certain—you don't want to cross them. I don't know how powerful the human world is now, but if they ever return, I doubt it will last long."
"Then I just have to grow stronger, and fast," Grey muttered.
"So, what do you say to my request?" the wolf asked.
Its offer is reasonable, and its strength will be invaluable for our mission, Grey mused.
"Fine. I accept. What do we do next?"
"Cut your thumb and place a drop of blood on my forehead."
Grey did as instructed. The moment his blood made contact, a white light enveloped the wolf before it dissolved into a black mist. The mist rushed toward Grey's palm, and without hesitation, he allowed it to merge with him. When it faded, a black symbol resembling a fireball was etched onto his palm.
Before Grey could process what had happened, Randin let out a startled shout.
"What the hell!"
"What? What is it?" Grey asked, alarmed.
"Your... your hair! It changed!"
"Changed? How?" Grey touched his head frantically, then drew his sword to check his reflection.
"What the f*ck?! Why is my hair red?!"
"A side effect of fusing with me," the wolf's voice echoed in Grey's mind.
"That's it? So, the process is done?" Grey asked.
"Yes, it's complete, you dimwit!" the wolf snapped.
Recognizing the familiar irritation in its voice, Grey chose not to argue.
Suddenly, the black mist surged from his palm again, reforming into the small wolf.
"Hold on a second!" it shouted, eyes widening. "You... you're a two-star mage?!"
Grey nervously scratched his head. His mana was still drained, and he dreaded another fight.
"Yes. So?"
"Unbelievable! Me? The great Noir the Wolf? Subdued by a mere two-star mage?! Me?!" Noir bellowed.
"Noir? That's your name?" Grey asked.
"No! It's yours, you clueless human! Of course, it's my name!" Noir snapped.
"You're a pretty annoyingly rude pet," Grey muttered.
"Pet?! How dare you!" Noir's horn glowed red before dimming again. "You're lucky familiars can't attack their bonded mages unless we're stronger. And while I should be stronger than you, I've lost a portion of my power over the years."
'Just how strong is this familiar? I'd rather not find out the hard way. Another reason to get stronger—so I don't end up getting killed by my own damn companion.' Grey sighed inwardly.
"One last thing," Noir said. "Don't expect me to come running at your every whim. If you get yourself into trouble, you're on your own. I'd rather roam freely than be stuck with a weakling."
And with that, Noir vanished.
'Well, there goes my plan of using him against the Goblin Lord...' Grey sighed inwardly.
"Grey, you good?" Randin asked.
"Yeah, let's just find a place to rest. Someone annoying made me burn through all my mana," Grey grumbled.
"That's your fault for being weak and needing to go all out just to keep up with me," Noir scoffed from within Grey's mind.
Grey let out another sigh. "Why couldn't I get a nice, obedient pet?"
"Probably because your sorry excuse of a mage self isn't strong enough to attract one. You should be grateful you got me instead of some third-rate familiar," Noir shot back. "Now quit whining and go rest."
Shaking his head, Grey and Randin found a small cave, settling in for the night to recover before continuing their journey the next day.
