Chapter 33 - To prove

Upon hearing Nova's answer, Dravon smiled subtly as he slid his filed axross the table and back to him, which Nova collected, while some of their members looked at him cautiously, they were the type who does many things before trusting someone new within their pack and their leader, was not one to be messed with.

So far Nova had a brief insight as to why he may be a threat to some of those within the hunter's association, for his point of view of the ways things ran in the city, though a bit harsh, had some truth to it and that scared those that had opposite views.

Dravon was not one to bow to law or authority, which made their suspicion of him, somewhat valid, but he knew better than to jump to conclusions based on just a few things; he had to learn more first.

"So, what will be my test?" Nova asked and Dravon's eyes narrowed while looking at him.

He leaned forward, resting his chin against his hand as the other members who were still there looked at him curiously. Many of them had had tests before joining their group, each sometimes different from the other, while some were exactly the same, but none necessarily easy.

Nova knew he had no choice but to follow Dravon, at least for the time being. His goal was to gain their trust while also disclosing the full extent of their operations. He needed to know if they were actually working with monsters, using the creatures for their own gain—or, worse, collaborating with the Order.

As he exited the meeting room with the others, Dravon motioned for him to follow him. "You handle yourself well from what I have heard and seen so far, yes I do my research on each new recruit we get, you are no different and I do not trust easily, so if you want to stay here, do well," the man said, his tone conversational but probing. "But I have noticed one thing: you don't strike me as someone who follows orders blindly."

Nova smirked slightly after hearing what he said. "I am not anyone's puppet; I refuse to be one, there is a reason behind most things, so I follow orders that make sense."

"That i a good answer, those who follow orders blindly, their personalities are quite questionable in my opinion, just like certain things can be bought, so can even your most trusted alley if their loyalty is not strong enough, which is why I test those who are with me, on many occasions, they prove themselves. Just remember that hesitation kills. If you see an opportunity, seize it," He replied, with a light chuckle, his tone casual, with an underlying warning that Nova picked up on quite fast.

"Don't worry, I understand and to win your trust, I will prove my loytaly, all you have to do is tell me what I need to do," Nova said and Dravon came to an abrupt halt, causing Nova to stop in his tracks, as they arrived in the main hall of the association.

"I can see you are quite determined to make your life here as a hunter, it is a good thing Nova, there will be a mission, one in which we will be tracking a monster, not just any monster, one which the adventurers has their eyes on as well as a few others from the association and the order," He replied and Nova's eyes narrowed.

'What kind of monster is he talking about that is dangerous enough to get all that attention?' Nova wondered when he noticed his shadow behind him, moving slightly and his brows furrowed, as he realized that Levan was listening in, doing his part of the job, making Nova feeling a bit more relieved than he before.

"A monster strong enough, or is there something else about it that made it catch all that attention?" Nova asked, with his arm crossed in front of his chest as he leaned against a nearby pillar.

"Oh there is much more to it, a part of it can make a new hunter like you quite rich, let's say this one is not all about the power or how strong the monster may be, these days there are many like that, i is about what they can give you, do you understand?" Dravon asked.

"Yeah, I understand that not all creatures are ranked based on their power or how strong they are or could become, but, this one, there is more to it, which I bet you will not tell me until I have proven myself, is that correct?" Nova asked, his eyes narrowed as he kept his gaze fixed on Dravon.

Dravon chuckled, seeing how fast he could piece things together. "You are correct, word for word, but there is a catch. This will be your first mission, in which you can either prove yourself to me or well... You know the rest," He responded.

Nova pushed himself off of the pillar and approached Drovan, standing before him face to face before they kept on walking. "Alright, I will go on the mission and once I prove myself, you will have to tell me all that I need to know."

They arrived at a side exit, where the rest of the group separated to prepare for the upcoming mission. Dravon gave Nova a small scroll. "Consider it a done deal; once you prove yourself to me, I will tell you everything you need to know, I always keep my word. Also, our informant inside the association, whose specialty is tracking, marked the monster's route. Study it carefully; not everything is as it appears sometimes. We move at midnight."

Nova took the scroll, nodding. "I understand. I will be there on time."

As he walked away, he felt a pair of eyes on him. It was the woman from earlier, Zara, who watched him with an unreadable expression before turning away and joining the others in preparation. Nova knew she didn't trust him. That made two of them.
