Chapter 18 - Old Friends, New Faces

A little time had passed since the end of the test and Amy had been announced as the winner, after recieving care from the medical bay she let herself back in the direction of the officer's office to be briefed on her performance.

She walked a bit hastily wanting nothing more than to know how well she performed. But that was not the entirety of why she was in a bit of a haste, another reason why she was in a haste was because she was still concerned about what happened earlier.

During the fight, she has blanked out momentarily causing her to lose control of herself, she did not believe it was possible till it happened. In the state that she lost herself she could remember something, it was like her instinct took over but she had no way to control it.

Now that she thought about it more clearly it felt like she did not want to control it, it was a rage she had thought she had left behind. Memories of her childhood from before her time in the orphanage started to flash in her mind. She winced her eyes to quench the images from resurfacing again, images she wanted nothing to do with anymore.

A few seconds passed before she walked into someone, she had been in too much of a haste to notice the person coming ahead. The sound of books falling to the ground alerted her to the idea that she had bumped into someone carrying books, but who on earth carried books in the military division.

The person she has bumped into bent down to pick the books while saying. "Oh sorry, my bad. I wasn't looking where I was going." It was a young male but she could not see him clearly since her glasses had also fallen to the ground on the impact causing her vision to become hazy.

The boy before her seemed to be around her age if she was to guess. He had been heading to the mech engineering department to return some books he had borrowed recently, he had a meeting with the professor, she had called him for a test out of the blue and he had so many book in front of him to see where he was going.

Strangely enough the young woman before him did not acknowledge him, she said nothing. She did not even bother to lend him a hand but he did not pay it any mind. For the past three years he had been under Professor Einstein no one seems to care about any of her disciples who aspired to be mech designers or as they liked to put it, "glorified budget wasters".

After he had packed up all his books in a hasty manner he noticed the young woman still standing there, he did not have time to address her. It was then he noticed her glasses on the ground, he lifted the books and her glasses which he handed to her. "I'm entirely sorry."

After apologising and identifying her to be a mech pilot trainee he knew his place and avoided her. He went his way and waved her goodbye.

A couple of seconds passed after the strange boy had left but Amy still remained where she stood looking at the glasses in her hand. She could not tell why but hearing his voice made her feel strange, images of a figure from her past appeared in her mind for a brief moment. She racked her head for minutes but she finally remembered a name and it made her face beam up with an unusual smile.

"Al."

Then the memories came rolling back in her mind. The memories of her early monents in the orphanage, she was still recovering from her horrid past when she met this young boy with shaggy hair. He walked up to her and tried to keep her company in her moment of silence.

She was always know for isolating herself from the others and Alto would be the one to always come to her and keep her company. What was strange was that he would hardly say a word, over time she started to open up to him and they soon became friends. Whenever he was bullied she would step in to protect him and in turn he would keep her company.

Amy always remembered that she could never stay apart from him, in the dark world she lived in she always saw him as her ray of sunshine. A line of tear rolled down her eye as she cursed herself for forgetting him. The last time she had heard of him was when they had gotten assessed and she realised that he would not be joining them. She had always tried to find him but trainees were not given such freedom to leave their quarters. She dedicated herself to her training to become the best she could and gain access to come find him.

That was three years ago and now she had been so consumed that she had forgotten about her dear friend.

Amy put her glasses on her face and looked back to where Alto had gone, but surely he was not there. She considered going after him, she had no idea what to say, all she wanted to do was to see him. To play with his hair, to hear his voice.

She swerved and started to run after him, she had not been permitted to take a few steps when the speakers spoke loudly.

"Trainee Amy please make your way to officer Pedro Lascara's office this instant."

Amy stopped in her tracksuit, this was one call she was trained to answer. She sighed and said under her breath, "I'm sorry Al, I'll come find you as soon as I'm done." With that being said she turned and walked away.

From where Alto stood before the door to the mech engineering department his chest tightened and his heart palpitated. He hoped the professor would not be in a mood to point out his lateness.

"Here goes all my hard work."
