I left.
I took a small fishing boat and headed east.
I did so without fulfilling my promise to Trish. I left without saying goodbye.
I was a scumbag till the end. Selfish till the end.
As the island shrunk in the distance, I realized fully what I had done. I had cowardly run away, my dad did not deserve that. Trish did not deserve that.
But I could not bear to see her look at me, it would have made me look whatever resolve I had.
The moment I pushed the boat off the shore, I realized that I had made a terrible, horrible mistake. I had made one of those impromptu decisions that I always managed to make that somehow managed to make my life even more difficult than it was supposed to be.
I had seen fishermen dozens of times, I watched them navigate boats with such ease and command that it made me think it was going to be easy. Well, I had just realized that watching and doing were two completely different things.
It was not.
