Chapter 12 - Part 11

During my time at the company, I began to realize that Sophie's identity was more complicated than I had first thought.

Let's not even mention the fact that she shares the same last name as the big boss.

The way my colleagues treat her with such respect speaks volumes.

Perhaps because of work, Sophie always seems to be near me.

She even goes as far as suggesting we have lunch together or go home together.

This has led to some gossip circulating within the company.

Some colleagues have indirectly asked about our relationship. Though I've tried to explain, the ambiguous looks they give clearly show they don't believe me.

Although their speculations aren't malicious, they still make me uncomfortable.

Because of this, I've been trying to keep some distance from Sophie.

Over time, Sophie must have noticed something was off.

One evening after work, Sophie blocked my way at the office door.

"Lucas, why are you avoiding me?"

I looked away, flustered. "Miss Lee, you've misunderstood..."

"Don't call me Miss Lee. Call me Sophie!"

Sophie stomped her foot in frustration.

I was at a loss for words.

The air between us grew tense.

Just then, the sound of a phone ringing urgently cut through the silence, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

Without even glancing at the caller ID, I picked up.

"Lucas, I'm at your company. Where are you?!"

Amanda's voice crackled through the phone.

I froze.

"My company?"

Amanda's voice took on a sarcastic edge. "You thought that by changing cities, I wouldn't be able to find you, huh?"

Amanda wasn't sure how she managed to get through those eight hours.

She'd found out Lucas's whereabouts from one of his friends.

At first, she'd been excited.

But soon, a wave of intense anger swept over her.

How dare he leave without a word?

I frowned.

From what I remembered, Amanda wasn't the type to relentlessly pursue someone.

Sophie, noticing my reaction, asked in confusion, "What's wrong?"

Hearing a woman's voice on the other end, Amanda's irritation flared up instantly.

"I! Who are you with?!"

I took a deep breath. "It's none of your business who I'm with. I told you before—if it's not about the divorce, don't come looking for me."

With that, I hung up the phone without hesitation.

Sophie's eyes widened in shock. "You're getting a divorce?"

"Yeah." I didn't try to hide it.

"As you can see, I'm a failure when it comes to relationships."

"I don't deserve to be loved."

Sophie's face softened with sympathy, and she shook her head stubbornly. "I think you're great. It's that woman who doesn't know how to appreciate you!"

While we were talking, the sound of loud voices echoed from outside.

"Lucas! Come out and see me!"
