Chapter 42 - Jack, James and Emma’s First Intense Battle! And Wolf Pack Annihilated!

As Jack, James, and Emma ventured deeper into the dense forest near Jakartha City, the air thickened with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves. The towering trees formed a natural fortress, their twisted branches entwined to create an eerie, near-impenetrable canopy. Sunlight struggled to filter through, casting fractured beams of light that flickered with every rustling leaf.

Each step they took was measured, careful, the crunch of twigs and fallen leaves beneath their boots the only sound accompanying the whispering breeze. An unsettling silence loomed over the forest too quiet, too unnatural.

Emma tightened her grip on her staff, her fingers tingling with the readiness of magic coiled at her fingertips. Jack kept his dagger low, muscles tense, his sharp gaze flitting between the darkened foliage. James, leading the trio, walked with his sword drawn, his steady breaths betraying no trace of fear.

Then, a sound deep, guttural, menacing.

A growl.

A vibration of primal fury rippled through the air, resonating in their bones. James halted mid-step, raising a hand in a silent command.

Shff!

The underbrush shuddered violently, brambles and leaves parting as shadows slithered through the vegetation. Black dark eyes, brimming with predatory hunger, glowed in the dim light. A pack of wolves emerged from the shadows, their muscular bodies moving in seamless unity. Their thick pelts rippled with tension, saliva dripping from their bared fangs. But one among them stood apart.

A monstrous black-furred beast, taller than the rest, its stance exuding dominance. Its legs bore a single, blindingly bright ring the unmistakable mark of a Peak 1-Star Beast. Around it, nine lesser wolves formed a semi-circle, their rings dimmer, marking them as mere 1-Star creatures.

A low snarl rumbled from the pack leader's throat, deep and guttural, sending tremors through the forest floor. Its piercing gaze fixated on them, primal and unyielding.

GRRRRRR...

Jack inhaled sharply. "We've got company."

James kept his stance firm, eyes locked onto the pack leader. "We hold formation. Emma, watch our backs."

Emma nodded, raising her staff. Arcane energy crackled at her fingertips, the air around her subtly shifting in response to her elemental affinity.

Without warning, the pack leader let out an ear-splitting howl

AWOOOOOO!

The wolves surged forward, claws tearing into the earth as they leaped toward their prey.

"Incoming!" Jack shouted, stepping into a battle stance.

Jack's grip tightened on his dagger. His knuckles turned white as his gaze locked onto the advancing wolves. "A full wolf pack… and the leader is at Peak 1-Star. This won't be easy."

Emma's voice was steady, though a flicker of tension danced in her eyes. "Then let's make sure we work together."

A chilling howl split the air.

Awooooo!

The leader of the pack an enormous black-furred beast with glowing golden eyes tilted its head back, unleashing a war cry that sent a tremor through the forest. The very ground seemed to pulse with primal energy. Instantly, the other wolves sprang forward, their snarls and snapping jaws echoing through the trees.

James reacted instantly, his voice sharp. "Come forth, Ironfang!"

A magic circle blazed beneath his feet, radiating silver light. From its depths, a massive armored hound materialized, its steel-coated fur glinting under the dappled sunlight.

Grrrrr…

Ironfang's deep snarl rumbled through the clearing, its crimson eyes locked onto the approaching predators.

"Ironfang, hold the front!" James commanded, stepping into a battle-ready stance.

The first wolf lunged, saliva dripping from its bared fangs.

Swish—CLANG!

James met it mid-air, his sword slicing through the beast's flank in a clean, brutal arc. The wolf tumbled to the ground with a pained yelp, blood staining the dirt.

Ironfang wasted no time. With a thunderous snarl, it pounced on another attacker, its powerful jaws locking around the creature's throat.

Crunch!

A sickening crack signaled the end of the wolf's life as its body went limp.

Jack darted between the chaos like a shadow, his dagger flashing as he weaved through the battlefield. One of the wolves pounced toward him

Whoosh!

But he sidestepped with barely a breath to spare. His dagger found its mark.

Shk!

He drove the blade into the creature's side, twisting it mercilessly before ripping it free. The wolf collapsed with a strangled whimper.

Meanwhile, Emma had already begun her incantations. She raised her staff, her voice calm but commanding. "Fireball!"

Fwoosh!

A sphere of flame ignited in her palm before she thrust it forward. The fireball streaked through the air, crackling like a vengeful spirit before colliding with one of the wolves. Boom! The explosion sent embers flying, and the beast howled in agony, its fur singed and smoking as it scrambled away, wounded.

Jack, using his assassin skills, vanished into the shadows of the trees with a flicker of movement. A wolf sniffed the air, growling in confusion as it searched for him. Its ears twitched, sensing something

Shing!

In the next instant, Jack reappeared behind it.

"Silent Kill."

His dagger sank into the wolf's neck, clean and precise. The beast let out a weak whimper before collapsing, its body falling limp against the damp forest floor.

The battle raged on, chaos unfolding like a deadly dance. James fended off multiple wolves with sweeping strikes, his sword flashing with each swing. He activated Evasion Instinct, his body reacting on instinct as he sidestepped a lunging wolf, feeling the rush of wind as its jaws snapped shut just inches away. With a swift counter, he drove his blade deep into its ribs, twisting the hilt to finish the job.

Squelch!

Emma, focusing on control rather than raw power, manipulated her elemental spells with precision. "Aqua Jet!" she commanded, her staff glowing with a deep blue hue.

Whoosh!

A high-pressure stream of water erupted, slamming into one of the wolves, sending it skidding across the ground. Without hesitation, she followed up. "Rock Bullet!"

Crack!

A dense stone projectile materialized in midair and shot forward with deadly force. It struck the beast's skull with a sickening thud, the impact shattering bone. The wolf collapsed instantly, unmoving.

Their teamwork was seamless blade, beast, and magic working in tandem. But the fight was far from over. The Alpha, watching its pack fall one by one, let out a guttural snarl. Its glowing ring pulsed with energy as it tensed its powerful muscles, preparing to strike.

A dangerous glint flickered in its eyes.

The real battle had just begun.

The pack leader, witnessing its subordinates falling one by one, let out a thunderous howl

Awooooo!

The cry echoed through the dense forest like a war drum, and the remaining wolves instantly grew more aggressive. Their movements became sharper, their attacks more coordinated, as if driven by desperation and vengeance.

James clenched his sword tighter, his instincts screaming. "We need to take down the leader!" he barked, his voice cutting through the chaos.

Jack gave a sharp nod and activated "Shadow Step." His figure flickered and vanished, reappearing behind the pack leader in an instant, dagger poised for a fatal strike. But the alpha was fast unnaturally fast. Its golden eyes flared with raw battle instinct as it twisted mid-air, massive claws slashing toward Jack.

Swish!

Jack barely managed to dodge, flipping backward just as Emma raised her staff. "Gust Blast!"

A violent burst of wind roared through the battlefield

Whoooosh!

The alpha's balance faltered, its heavy frame staggering from the force. That was the opening James needed.

He surged forward, aura blazing around him. His sword gleamed under the fractured sunlight filtering through the trees, a deadly arc slicing through the air. With an earth-shaking impact, his blade struck

SLASH!

The steel cutting deep into the pack leader's shoulder. A furious, pain-stricken howl erupted from the beast as it twisted its massive frame, snapping its fangs at James. But before it could retaliate, Ironfang struck.

CRUNCH!

The steel-coated hound clamped its iron-like jaws onto the alpha's hind leg, forcing the beast down with sheer brute strength. It thrashed, struggling to break free, but Emma wasn't about to let it escape.

With fierce determination, she raised her staff high, fire swirling at its tip. "Fireball!"

A searing sphere of flames erupted from her staff

Fwoooosh!

Blazing toward the trapped beast. The fireball struck with explosive force

BOOM!

Flames surged, swallowing the alpha in an inferno. The surrounding air crackled with intense heat as smoke billowed into the canopy above. When the blaze finally died down, the massive wolf lay motionless, charred fur smoldering.

For a brief moment, silence stretched across the battlefield.

Then, as if a spell had been broken, the remaining wolves let out distressed whines before turning tail. One by one, they vanished into the depths of the forest, their figures swallowed by the endless shadows of the trees.

Breathing heavily, James wiped the sweat from his brow, his chest rising and falling with exertion. "That… was intense." His grip on his sword finally loosened, the weight of battle settling in.

Jack let out a short laugh, shaking his head. "Yeah, but we handled it well. No major injuries" He winced slightly as he flexed his arm. "Well, mostly."

Emma exhaled slowly, lowering her staff as the last embers of her magic flickered away. The tension in her shoulders eased, though her heart still pounded from the fight. "We fought as a team, and it paid off."

Ironfang, still standing guard, gave a low growl before wagging its tail. The steel-coated beast's golden eyes gleamed with satisfaction.

James crouched beside his loyal companion, running his fingers over the armored plating on its back. "Good work, buddy. You really held your ground." Ironfang responded with a pleased huff, nudging James' hand in return.

Jack turned to Emma, his expression appreciative. "Your magic was really effective in controlling the battlefield. Those well-timed spells saved me more than once."

Emma brushed a stray lock of hair from her face, her lips curling into a small but genuine smile. "I just focused on supporting you two." Despite her modest words, there was a spark of pride in her eyes.

James sheathed his sword with a metallic shhk and looked down at the fallen pack leader. The sheer size of the beast up close made it all the more daunting. "A Peak 1-Star Beast… it was tough, but we took it down together." His voice carried the weight of the accomplishment.

Jack knelt, running his hand over the wolf's thick fur. "This thing put up one hell of a fight." He pulled out a dagger, expertly carving out the pack leader's fangs. "We'll need these as proof for the guild."

Emma lifted her staff once more, murmuring, "Aqua Jet." A controlled stream of water spiraled through the air, washing away the blood from their weapons and clothes. The cool droplets felt refreshing against their skin, a soothing contrast to the heat of battle.

As the last of the crimson stains disappeared, the three of them stood side by side, gazing at the battlefield where they had fought together for the first time. There was no need for words. The unspoken bond of shared struggle and triumph had already been forged.

With a final glance at the fading sunlight filtering through the trees, James exhaled. "Let's go home."

The trio nodded in unison, stepping forward as one.
