Jessica's breath hitched—just for a second. A flinch so small it could've been missed by anyone else. But Shantel saw it.


At such a direct question laden with disappointment from her daughter, the mask of control Jessica Hale always wore didn't crack… it shattered.


"I didn't steal anything," she said through clenched teeth. "I kept it. There's a difference."


"Oh?" Shantel tilted her head, her voice dipping into a silkier and darker tone. "What's the difference, Mother? Enlighten me."


Jessica's hands curled into fists on her lap. "That bracelet would've ended up in the wrong hands."


"The wrong hands? Since you could 'keep' it, I guess the bracelet ending up on the screen in an auction event can't be considered being in the wrong hands, right?" Shantel's sarcasm couldn't have been well served.


Jessica couldn't refute Shantel's accusations, after all, she was the one that lost the bracelet after snatching it away from Shantel's neck that year.
