"Good. Back to internships." Aizawa eyed Nejire, who was still grinning. "And stop encouraging him."
Nejire gasped. "Me? I'm innocent!"
Aizawa ignored her. "As you've heard, these internships will be more intense. Your agencies will expect real results. If you can't keep up, don't expect them to hold your hand."
The class straightened up. Joking aside, this was serious.
Mirio clapped his hands together. "Now, for those of you still undecided, we have some recommendations."
Nobody in Class 1-A said anything at first. Most of us already had an idea of where we were going, but a few were still figuring it out.
Izuku looked ready to ask something, but before he could, Mirio grinned and tilted his head. "Actually, I've got a better idea." He stretched his arms out. "How about you all team up against me?"
The class blinked.
Mina sat up. "Like… fight you?"
"Yup!" Mirio said, still smiling like this wasn't about to be the biggest mistake of our lives.
Sero tilted his head. "Dude, I don't think you get it. There's like, what, twenty of us?"
Mirio nodded. "Sounds fair."
Kirishima chuckled. "You say that like we won't just jump you."
"You could try!" Mirio said, completely unbothered.
Bakugo crossed his arms. "Tch. This some kind of joke?"
Tamaki shook his head. "It's not a joke."
Nejire was already buzzing with excitement. "Ooooh, this is gonna be so fun!"
Aizawa sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Fine. Gym Gamma. Don't destroy anything important."
Mirio pumped a fist in the air. "Alright! Let's go!"
We got up and headed to the training ground.
[Target: Mirio Togata]
[Quirk: Permeation – Allows user to phase through solid matter at will. Grants brief intangibility and the ability to pass through obstacles. Drawbacks: Requires precise control, loss of senses while active.]
Huh. That explained the confidence. If he could phase through anything, landing a hit would be damn near impossible.
We reached Gym Gamma, and Mirio took off his school jacket, rolling his shoulders. "Alright! Rules are simple... take me down, or at least land a solid hit. You got your quirks, teamwork, and a full class. I just got me."
Bakugo cracked his knuckles. "You're gonna regret that."
Todoroki adjusted his stance. "I doubt it."
Mina nudged me. "Alright, fearless leader, you calling the shots?"
I crossed my arms, thinking. "Let's first see what his Quirk is. Bakugo..."
"I don't take orders from you, asshole!" He shot forward before I finished, explosions launching him straight at Mirio.
I grinned. "Perfect."
Mina poked my side. "You planned this, right?"
I chuckled. "Of course."
Bakugo threw an explosion, aiming straight for Mirio's face. It should have hit... point-blank, dead center. Should have. Instead, it passed right through him like he was a ghost. The blast hit the ground behind him, kicking up smoke, but Mirio? Still standing, completely untouched.
The class tensed. Bakugo skidded back, glaring. "The fuck was that?!"
Mirio beamed. "Good effort! But not quite enough!"
He disappeared.
Not teleported, but sunk. Right through the goddamn floor.
Bakugo barely had time to react before Mirio popped up behind him, already swinging. Bakugo turned, but the hit landed first. A clean, fast uppercut straight to the gut. Bakugo coughed, staggering back.
Mirio was already moving again.
"Fuck—!" Bakugo swung, but it passed right through Mirio again. No impact, nothing solid to hit. He phased again, dropping back into the floor like it was water.
The others snapped into action.
"Surround him!" I called out.
Kirishima rushed forward, arms hardened. "Got it!"
Sero fired a tape line, trying to block Mirio's escape. Shoji spread his arms, covering more ground. Todoroki sent ice sweeping across the floor, hoping to catch him when he reappeared.
None of it worked.
Mirio surfaced behind Sero, grabbed him by the back of the collar, and threw him into Kirishima. Both went down.
Yaoyorozu formed a staff, stepping back. "His Quirk...!"
"Phasing," I finished, already tracking his movement. "He can go through anything."
Todoroki narrowed his eyes. "And we can't touch him."
Mirio flashed forward again, weaving through the chaos. Kaminari fired off a bolt of electricity. It went right through. Jiro sent a soundwave. No effect. He wasn't dodging...he was slipping right past everything like none of it mattered.
"Okay, what the fuck is this?" Mina muttered.
Iida shot toward Mirio, trying to land a kick. Mirio dipped under, grabbed Iida by the waist, and sent him flipping through the air. He landed hard.
"He is untouchable," Tokoyami muttered.
"No," I corrected, watching Mirio phase out of another attack. "He is timing it. He can't phase forever."
Bakugo, back on his feet, scowled. "Then we just wait for him to slip up."
Mirio glanced at me. "Sharp thinking!"
And then he disappeared again.
I shifted. Mirio had no idea where I was now.
The moment he phased through the ground, he was blind. No light reached his eyes, no sound hit his ears, no scent touched his nose. He didn't know where anyone was until he came back up, forced to constantly relearn the battlefield.
He had to guess.
That meant he could fuck up.
Bakugo went in again, blasting forward, but Mirio vanished right before impact. Bakugo's fist met empty air, his momentum carrying him too far forward. Mirio reappeared behind him and drove a fist into his back. Bakugo coughed, stumbling, and Mirio was already gone again.
Kirishima charged, hardening up. "Try and phase through this!"
Mirio popped up just outside his reach. "Okay!" He weaved around, sidestepped the punch, and used Kirishima's forward motion to throw him to the ground.
"Come on, you gotta be faster!"
Shoji's limbs stretched, trying to block off exits, but Mirio ducked low and flipped through. "Nice try!"
Todoroki sent a wall of ice sweeping forward. Mirio dropped through the floor, dodging before it even reached him. "Oh, that was close!"
Kaminari aimed a stun bolt at the spot Mirio would reappear. Mirio popped up two feet to the left. Kaminari missed.
"Oh, good idea! But I can move too, you know!"
One by one, they went down. Mirio slipped past them, dodging, countering, flipping them over with almost no effort. He made it look easy.
And the entire time, I watched.
He wasn't untouchable. He was predicting. Guessing where everyone would be when he came back up. And, more importantly, he couldn't sense shit while phased.
If I could figure out where he would land before he did, I could hit him first.
Mirio took down Jiro and Ojiro in quick succession, moving fast.
Yaoyorozu tried making a net. Mirio phased right through.
Uraraka floated debris to try and drop it on him. He stepped just out of range.
Tokoyami sent Dark Shadow. Mirio sank underground, then popped up behind him.
More fell.
Bakugo got back up, trying again. "I will blow your ass up!"
Mirio beamed. "You are welcome to try! No ho-"
Bakugo exploded forward, but Mirio phased through his attack and knocked him out in one punch.
Silence.
No one else was left.
Just me.
Mirio dusted off his hands. "Guess it is just us now!"
I gripped my bat. "Looks like it."
Mirio grinned, rolling his shoulders. "Think you can land a hit?"
I twirled the bat once. "Dunno. But you are gonna feel me trying."
He laughed. "Alright! Let's see what you got!"
I lunged, swinging for his side. My bat cut through nothing. He was already gone.
He didn't just phase... he vanished under the floor, cutting off all his senses. I kept moving, no pattern, no rhythm, shifting my weight erratically. If he had to guess where I was, then I wasn't going to make it easy.
I feinted left, ducked right, then leapt back...
His hand shot up from the ground, grabbing at air where my leg should have been.
Missed.
I twisted mid-air, swinging my bat down just as he reappeared...
Nothing. He phased again, dropping out of reach before my bat could connect.
I hit the ground running. No hesitation. No stops. If I stood still, I was dead. If I moved predictably, I was dead.
Mirio popped up behind me. A fist aimed for my ribs. I twisted...
It still clipped me.
Pain shot through my side. I clenched my teeth, but my feet didn't stop. The moment I reacted, he phased out again.
I adjusted. Shorter steps. Quick changes. Feints, not just in swings but in movement. Mirio had to predict me while blind. I wasn't going to let him.
He reappeared... high ground this time, dropping from above. I swerved left, bat swinging up.
He phased mid-fall.
I went for a second swing the moment he landed...
He ducked, dodged, then his leg snapped up.
I barely got my arms up before his kick hit.
I staggered. He went for another.
I dropped low, sweeping my bat. He phased, my swing passing through his leg.
Gone again.
I shot forward. If he wasn't going to stay, neither was I.
He popped up ahead. I swung mid-step, baiting a dodge...
He didn't fall for it. His hand was already coming for my chest. I twisted...
Not fast enough.
He slammed into me, sending me sliding back.
I spat out air, rolling my shoulders. "Damn."
Mirio smiled. "That all you got?"
I smirked, raising my bat. "Nah."
He rushed in. I ran to meet him.
No dodging. No defense. Just a straight charge.
I swung. He phased. He dropped through the ground...
I pivoted mid-step.
He reappeared.
I swung the second his head was visible...
He phased again.
I slammed my foot down.
He popped up on my right.
I twisted-faster this time-bat cutting through the air where his shoulder should have been.
He dipped under, fist flying toward my gut...
I tanked it.
His eyes widened slightly.
I swung from the other side...
He phased out before it connected.
He was adapting. So was I.
I kept moving, kept faking, kept making sure I wasn't anywhere he thought I would be. Damn I wasn't even anywhere I thought I would be. I was a Wildcard.
My grip on the bat tightened.
Bait. Dodge. Readjust.
I lunged. Swing. Miss.
He countered. I let him, taking the hit...
His fist connected, but my bat was already coming back around.
He phased too fast.
I turned before he could disappear completely.
He popped up...
I swung.
He phased.
I was already pivoting.
He reappeared...
I threw the bat straight down.
Mirio reappeared directly under it.
It slammed into his head.
The class gasped.
Mirio staggered back, eyes wide. Then, he grinned. "Oh, nice one!"
He dropped again.
I moved.
Mirio popped up to my left. I wasn't there.
He turned, confused. I was already behind him.
I swung.
Mirio phased.
The bat passed through his body.
He sunk back down.
I repositioned.
He resurfaced farther away, scanning.
"Ohh, you figured it out, huh?"
I twirled the bat once. "What gave it away?"
He grinned. "You are not guessing, are you? You know where I will be."
I shrugged.
He disappeared.
I adjusted.
He reappeared behind me.
I turned.
He grinned. "You are really fast."
I swung again.
He dodged.
I lunged forward, cutting off his escape. He phased. I pulled back at the last second, waiting.
He popped back in.
I swung.
This time, I connected.
The bat hit his ribs.
Mirio actually grunted, hopping back. He rolled his shoulder. "Wow! Okay, that actually stung a little."
"First time?"
He laughed. "Yeah, you could say that."
He disappeared again.
I exhaled, adjusting my stance. He was playing serious now.
He resurfaced to my right, threw a punch. I ducked, twisted under his arm, and swung for his stomach. He phased through it and disappeared again.
This time, I followed.
I wasn't aiming at him. I was aiming at where he would be.
Mirio reappeared in front of me, mid-swing.
I sidestepped.
His punch missed.
I slammed the bat into his shoulder.
Mirio winced, stepped back. He phased, repositioned.
I didn't let him breathe.
He popped up again. I was already swinging.
The bat clipped his leg.
Mirio actually stumbled.
The class was dead silent.
