Chapter 18 - Investigation and Revelation

"Oh... well..." Li didn't quite know what to say. Instead of omitting the details where he used humanly impossible powers, he just told the whole story.

I probably shouldn't have said it, right? Whatever, I want to become her bodyguard anyway, so it shouldn't be too bad to let her know that I am stronger than normal humans.

"Yes, I flew here," he finished the sentence and suddenly started to float a few inches above the ground, greatly surprising Yan Yuiling.

She walked up to him and carefully looked for anything that would explain Li's floating. She even put her hand above and below Li to search for any sort of strings.

"How?" Was the only thing she could ask after some time. Humans can fly?

"As I said, I flew you back here. I have some special powers, called cultivation, which allow me to surpass the limits normal humans without cultivation have," he explained slowly.

"Cultivation, in like the books people read online nowadays?" Yan Yuiling asked doubtfully. There was no way these things were real, right?

"There are records of cultivation on this planet?" Li asked with excitement.

"On this planet? Well, yes, there are fictional books about cultivation here, but what do you mean with "this planet"?" Yan Yuiling asked.

After a few seconds of thought, Li made a decision. "Well, I am indeed not from this world..."

...

Lao Bing, sitting at her desk and going through some of her files, sighed. Tonight was another quiet, boring night without any new cases.

She was a detective at one of the police stations within Yichang City. Sadly, this police station, lying in the district of the rich, presented mostly boredom and open corruption.

Fighting her way up through the positions in the mostly male-dominant police system, she saw a lot of different types of people. Guilty, not guilty, and something in between. People lusting over her and people scheming for personal gain. Most of all, though, the dark side of the normal population.

But even with that, the one type of people she hated the most were the people who thought they could do anything they wanted to because they had money.

Sadly enough, this mentality of superiority because of money was proved right most of the time, as her superiors held tight-knit relationships with these tycoons.

Her phone rang, and she picked up without thought. This night couldn't get any worse anyway.

"Detective Lao, we have an emergency at the Sadieu hotel..."

Driving her police car with sirens, Lao Bing mentally recapped the call. The young masters of most of the wealthy families as well as the security passed out? This was an unprecedented occurrence.

Arriving at the scene of the crime, she saw the panicked ambulance personnel carrying the young masters of multiple famous families to their ambulances while under the pressure of the parents of these young masters urging them to hurry.

A chaotic scene, which she didn't want to get entangled in. So instead of asking these stuck-up parents first, she directly entered the building and arrived in the hall where Ding Feng's birthday took place.

Inside, the bodies of the security guards still lay on the laminate floor. While the parents of the young master facilitated their transfer to hospitals first, the poor guards had to wait much longer for any form of treatment.

The scene in its totality, though, was a lot more orderly than she expected. Even though all of these guards and young masters passed out, there was no sign of any sort of fight taking place.

The chairs, tables, and even the food and drinks stood orderly in their supposed location, without any signs of even a broken bottle of wine. The drinks the guests had in their hands, though, broke on impact on the floor, making it look less orderly than the scene truly was.

She knelt down close to one of the guards and checked for any visible injuries. It really was as she was told on the phone. Everyone was passed out, yet no one was injured.

Looking at the positions of bodyguards, something seemed clear. These bodyguards were in the process of capturing somebody. No one was in a standardized position during an event like a birthday party, and collectively, they almost formed a circle towards a single position she quickly marked.

After figuring all of this out by herself, she was ready to talk to witnesses. For her, the most important thing in any investigation was to investigate the situation by herself first before questioning anybody. Giving her some sense of whether the people were telling her something close to the truth.

In this case, though, even while having complete clarity from the witnesses, all telling the exact same story that even matched her personal investigation, there was one problem. Nobody knew how the perpetrator made it happen.

Nobody talked about seeing a weapon or even a movement. And then he just vanished? Lao Bing herself, belonging to the secret, special force of the police that understood some ancient martial arts and even trained in it, didn't know about any means of achieving these feats.

After completing her investigation, there were only three leads left to explore about this mysterious man. First, the supposed employer of the man who refused to talk without his lawyer or father from the start. Secondly, the man who ran away before everyone else was knocked out, and finally the missing young master Ding Feng, whose birthday party took place.

...

"This, this world is almost exactly like distributed in all of these novels," Yan Yuiling realized in a daze. What Li told her was something she never thought she would believe, but after showing her some of his abilities while telling her about the world he lived in, she could only believe he was telling the truth, leaving her stunned.

Meanwhile, Li, although not as shaken as Yan Yuiling, could not believe Yan Yuiling's words as well.

Literature accurately describing the circumstances of the world of cultivation? Is this a coincidence? People, imagining the reality of an accident? Or is this something more than an accident? Something that leaked through the real cultivation elite that found ways to escape the confines of the shallow spiritual energy of this space?

In the end he didn't know, but it gave him a new feeling of excitement. Something told him that finding the answers would let him cultivate once again.

But before, something else, something he truly wanted to do, came first. "Yan Yuiling, now that Ding Feng is unlikely to leave you alone and will most likely increase his measures to get you to capitulate. Will you employ me as your bodyguard?"
