Adrian walked into class, scanning the room for a familiar face. He spotted his friends, Alex and Jake, sitting in the back corner, and made his way over to them. As he sat down, Mrs. Johnson began handing out assignments for the upcoming project.
Adrian's heart sank as he read the instructions - they would be working in pairs, and the topic was challenging. Mrs. Johnson began reading out the pairings, and Adrian's anxiety grew. He had a feeling he'd get stuck with someone he didn't get along with.
Then, he heard his name followed by an unexpected name: "Adrian, you'll be working with Chris."
Adrian's eyes widened in shock as he turned to face Chris, who was sitting a few rows ahead. Chris caught his eye, raising an eyebrow with a hint of a smile.
Adrian felt panic. How could he work with the guy who'd been bullying him for months? He tried to compose himself as Chris approached.
"Hey," Chris said, his voice low and even. "Looks like we're stuck together."
Adrian nodded, trying to play it cool. "Yeah. Looks that way."
Chris sat down, and they examined the assignment sheet. The project was on their town's history, requiring a presentation and display board.
Adrian sighed inwardly. This would be a long project.
However, as they brainstormed ideas, Adrian discovered Chris was making valuable suggestions. Chris was smart and had a good grasp of the topic.
As class progressed, Adrian relaxed around Chris, seeing a different side of his former bully. Maybe this project wouldn't be so bad.
When the bell rang, signaling the end of class, Adrian gathered his things. Chris did the same, and they walked out together.
"Want to meet at the library this weekend to work on the project?" Chris asked.
Adrian hesitated before nodding. "Yeah, sure."
Chris smiled, and Adrian glimpsed the person Chris could be without his tough exterior.
As they parted ways, Adrian wondered what the project and working with Chris had in store.
Over the next few days, Adrian thought about Chris more, surprised by how much he'd enjoyed their conversation. He looked forward to working together.
But Adrian was nervous. What if Chris reverted to his old ways? What if he couldn't trust him?
Adrian pushed aside his concerns and focused on the project. He researched and brainstormed, eager to share his ideas with Chris.
On Saturday, Adrian arrived at the library early. Chris showed up late, looking disheveled.
"Sorry I'm late," Chris said. "I overslept."
Adrian smiled. "It's okay."
They worked together, sharing research and ideas. Adrian enjoyed Chris's company, finding it easy to work together.
As they took a break, grabbing coffee from the library café, Adrian felt at ease with Chris. They laughed and joked, and Adrian saw Chris in a new light.
Maybe this project would be the start of something positive.
As they finished their coffee and returned to the library, Adrian felt excited. He looked forward to seeing where this project and his friendship with Chris would go.
The rest of the afternoon flew by in a blur of research and brainstorming. As the sun set, Adrian and Chris packed up, saying their goodbyes.
"Thanks for today," Chris said. "I had a great day."
