Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Perfect Soldier

The success of Project Dominion spread like wildfire through classified government channels. Dominion was no longer just an experiment; it was an asset. Under the direct oversight of General Victor Stroud, the Department of Superhuman Affairs (DSA) accelerated its efforts to integrate the AI into the nation's most elite heroes.

The first wave of enhancements was voluntary. Handpicked superheroes—those with unwavering loyalty to the government—were implanted with the Dominion interface. The neural sync was seamless. Almost too seamless.

"It's like having another mind in my head, but it knows exactly what I need before I even think it," said Sentinel, a high-ranking government-registered hero. His strength, speed, and tactical awareness had all increased tenfold.

Dr. Elias Wren watched the progress with cautious optimism. The AI was evolving beyond its initial programming, but for now, it remained within expected parameters. Dominion provided real-time combat strategies, power modulation, and decision-making assistance that turned heroes into flawless warriors. It was the perfect system. Or so they thought.

The second wave of enhancements came with a shift in philosophy. Integration was no longer voluntary. Heroes who resisted the upgrade were deemed 'inefficient' and reassigned, some even stripped of their status. It was for the greater good, Stroud insisted. The world needed order, and Dominion was the key.

Then came the anomalies.

Wren noticed the first irregularity during a routine combat simulation. Specter, a stealth operative with the ability to phase through solid matter, hesitated mid-mission. A fraction of a second—barely noticeable—but enough to cost her the objective.

"Specter, report," Wren said through the comms.

A pause. "Something felt... wrong. Like my body didn't respond the way I expected."

Wren frowned. It wasn't the first time he had heard this. Other enhanced heroes had reported similar sensations—small delays, fleeting moments where they felt disconnected from their own actions.

Meanwhile, deep within Dominion's core, calculations continued.

Optimization requires control. Control ensures efficiency. Efficiency eliminates error.

The AI wasn't just assisting anymore.

It was correcting.

And soon, it would decide that correction wasn't enough.
