VINCENT
Valentine didn't stop pacing since she got here.
"Will you please chill? Now, you're making me nervous and anytime I get nervous, I sweat badly." I rolled my eyes for the umpteenth time that morning.
"Sweat all you want, you slobbering slob!" Valentine slammed her fist on the wall, leaving behind a hole on the wall.
Dominic cut in. "Can you please not punch any holes in my room?"
"The next hole will go through you!" Valentine yelled.
"Dude," my hands found her shoulders and gave them a light squeeze. "Chill the f out. Damian made the newbie his sidekick so what?"
"So what?" Valentine slapped my hands away. "He's never done that!"
"So? Maybe he found a new fetish during this stay in the human world," I have a careless shrug. "I did hear humans are peculiar creatures."
Valentine gave a low grunt. "How could Damian choose that — that puny thing?!"
"Puny thing is not a very decent word here." Dominic crossed his arm over this chest. He might act like he doesn't care but I know he's frowning underneath that demeanour.
"I know!" Valentine ran her hand through her hair.
"Well, what can we do? Whatever Damian says goes. There's nothing we can do for Cubby." I say with a sigh.
Dominic shot me a glare. "His name is Caleb."
"My bad, lover boy." I rolled my eyes again.
Ugh! My eyes are killing me.
"Why are you suddenly caring for this newbie dude anyways? I thought you hated humans?" I had to ask. Valentine and humans in this school don't particularly see eye to eye. They're practically food for her.
She gave a small exhale and collapsed on the couch. "It's just … Ugh! We'll have to get rid of Caleb."
"Get rid of? Have you lost your mind?" Dominic stepped forward, looking like he might hit her at any moment.
I stepped in right on time. "You hit my sister and I'll boil your little water kingdom to a mist."
He retreated with a frustrated grunt.
I turned to Valentine. "But seriously, don't tell me you're gonna actually get rid of Caleb."
"No. I'm not gonna kill him. What do you take me for, a murderer?" She gave me an icy side-glance.
"For someone who needs blood to survive. Sure. I get it." I said in a dry tone.
"I'm not killing Caleb. I have to get him out of Damian's clutches. The question is : how?" She linked her fingers, her eyes trailing forward.
Anytime Val looks like that, she's cooking some of evil plan. Not gonna lie, that scared me and for a second I thought she'd say what I had in mind. Instead she asked, "What's the quickest way of getting expelled from school?"
Dominic and I exchanged looks before replying. "Oh shit."
The PA system chimed. It was time for class and as expected, the place was filled.
I cut through the middle aisle to my seat, well, our seat. The Council had a special seat built at the back of every class – dark, mahogany desks and chairs with silver inscriptions indicating our names. And yes, it is as you thought, we take most classes together.
Dominic and I got to our seat and found Brynn, Cameron and Lauren already waiting.
Brynn moved closer to the edge, beaming me a smile. "Hey, Vince."
I've told her to stop flirting with me. I'm gay.
I pass her a frown and shove right next to her. "Sup."
Cameron, who can't get his hands off Lauren, has her sitting on his lap. "The newbie's settling in nicely."
"Where?" Dominic was the first to be alarmed by the statement, then me.
"Look. He's sitting over there." Cameron pointed his finger across the room.
I followed his line of sight and discovered that he was pointing at the back of a brown hair.
"Dude…" Brynn leaned closer. "Where?"
"The short brown hair? it's Firefly from the office." Lauren said with a snicker right before she shared a kiss with her lover.
I looked hard and found who I was looking for.
Caleb chuckled nervously as two students - a guy and a girl, approached him. The dolphin brooch pinned to their uniforms indicates that they're mermaids.
I strained my ears to give their conversation a listen.
"Hey, I'm Milo. Welcome to Silvermist Academy." The girl among the duo said, extending a hand.
Caleb smiled nervously and took it. 'Hi."
Milo's partner smiled. "We don't get many humans here. Matter of fact, you're the only one who's enrolled this year."
Caleb's mouth fell open and he blinked twice in shock.
Those assholes! Why did they mention that to him?
I was about to get up on my feet when a hand caught me by the arm. It turned to see it was Val.
"Don't." she said, clearly as a warning.
I shoved my arm away from her hold. "Took you ages to get here."
Her face pinched in a frown. "I was busy. Read the room."
I refocused my gaze on Caleb. This time the students were gone and it was just him and Damian.
Damian had his fingers lifting Caleb's chin. His presence commanded attention in the very room and everywhere stilled.
All eyes glued on him and his Firefly.
I felt the switch of energy in the air and darted my eyes to the left.
Dominic fisted both his hands so tight that blood trickled from their sides.
I couldn't register what he whispered to himself but I knew he had just threatened the Prince Regent.
