"I'm sorry. He can't stand your presence any longer."
"There must be some way you can change his mind. If I leave here, I have no shelter anywhere. I don't have any friends who would take me in. It wouldn't be fair. He only took a fresh, virgin teenager because of me."
"So you're asking for justice?" Kate laughed, unable to contain herself.
"What do you think I did to not deserve justice?" Sarah asked angrily.
"I don't know. You didn't do anything to me. But I bet Anna must not have liked being an orphan, and a few years later being sold to the most dangerous family of mobsters... I think she must have thought it was an injustice to pay with her own body for something that would never have happened without her intervention."
"What's more, she has to be very grateful. Where else would she get such a powerful and wealthy man? He gave her a queen's life. Nothing was denied her. We can't guarantee that her mother wouldn't do the same. A mother knows what's best for her daughter... If it weren't for me, she'd be here today with a child in her belly, one in her arms, and another held in her hands. With her beauty, do you really think the boys didn't lust after her? I drove them all away and gave her to one who knew how to treat a real woman."
"I don't think she feels that way, but I don't care how she feels. For my part, I'd like her never to be found. Not until I'm married to Adam."
"Has he asked you to marry him?"
"Not yet. But he will soon. Adam wasn't born to be alone, and when loneliness knocks on his door, he'll run into the nearest arms, which are mine."
"He's always used us as lovers. Why would he give you his name, knowing that he doesn't need it to get you into bed?" Sarah was scathing, but Kate didn't care. She knew it was just jealousy.
"I know how to turn things in my favor. I'm a lawyer and manipulating emotions isn't just an Alpha virtue. He'll do my bidding." She said enigmatically. Deep down, she hoped that Adam's men, from all the cities he commanded, would start to like her, and thereby win their allegiance, as Anna had done. She still didn't know that Adam intended to turn everyone who worked for him into werewolves.
"Since you consider yourself so capable, ask him to let me stay. Or I'll carry out my threat." Sarah said and went over to the drinks table and poured herself a whisky.
Kate glared hatefully at Sarah.
"I won't do what you want, Sarah. I've already helped you too much. You should be more careful with your threats. I'm not just a lawyer. Adam chooses his partners well. I can destroy you too. I wouldn't be here if I were useless to Adam. But I'll let you have dinner with us and mourn with him. Maybe he'll let you stay. But I can already tell you that he said he didn't want to see you here anymore. So get ready to hear some nastiness, or maybe he'll surprise me and let you stay?"
"I'll convince him. It's even better if I talk to him myself. I don't want to owe you any favors, but it's not out of fear, Kate. As soon as Adam gets his hands on the only thing you have that he wants, which we both know is Allister's will, he'll kill you. And I'm needed here. Apart from the fact that none of his women can outperform me in his bed and my beauty, he can't do without a witch here."
Kate smiled and fell silent. In her thoughts, she saw herself in a magnificent white dress, entering the church, and all eyes turning to her, admiring her splendor. Was it too much to dream that Anna would be there to applaud her victory? If Sarah managed to convince Adam, then he would feel the pleasure of looking at her triumphantly.
Adam arrived home, and as soon as he parked the car he saw Sarah in the pool, cocktail in hand, and his mouth went thin with the disgust he felt at the sight. He thought he had been clear with Kate. He slammed the car door hard and entered the mansion, looking for an explanation from Kate as to why she hadn't understood that it was an order.
He went to find her at the dining room table. Genevieve was there. He paused for a moment and stared at her, before interrupting her. He could see through her eyes, but even so, he knew that she was hiding something that was important to him. And Adam suspected it was about Anna.
They were having the same cocktail that Sarah was in the habit of preparing, and they seemed very excited. He didn't see any of his men there, and that annoyed him too. As soon as they saw him, they immediately shut up and got serious.
Adam went back into the kitchen and asked them to make him the same thing Genevieve and Kate were drinking. He waited, tapping his fingers impatiently on the counter. As soon as one of them handed him the glass, he returned to the pantry, where the two continued. Kate was uncomfortable, but Genevieve had her usual calm countenance. He sat down and greeted them as he usually did.
After Adam noticed that they had visibly relaxed, he turned to Kate.
"Kate, I think you misunderstood me. When we talked earlier, I told you that I didn't want that rare piece in my house anymore... But I was greeted by the sight of that creature still here, and enjoying the comforts it is no longer entitled to. Was there a mistake on your part? Were my words unclear?"
Genevieve raised her eyebrows and sipped her drink. She thought about leaving, but it was too late to leave and let them sort out their problems, but she was satisfied with Adam's decision.
