Zayn hadn't stayed idle. He gathered his last ounces of strength to crawl toward his phone and dial a number. His voice was barely more than a whisper, but the message still got through.
"Why do I always have to meddle in things that don't concern me ? This is where I end up every time, it's almost humiliating… But I don't regret it. She deserves to be supported… I wish someone had come to my rescue that day, too… I'm so tired… I'll just rest for a few minutes."
He let out a relieved sigh and closed his eyes.
— Wait, I'm not done with her yet. If you're here, it must be because the girls called for help. Turns out they're not so useless after all.
Stacy's blood ran cold when she met Maddy's gaze. Her face was contorted with uncontrollable rage.
— Do you remember when you swore we'd stay together and that you'd never abandon me ? You've always been a liar ! You left ! Again !!

— Stop lying ! That's all you ever do ! I hate you !
— You know, when I left for England, it was the first time I did something on my own, without you two. For the first time, I felt like I had my own life, like I wasn't bound to be somewhere at a precise moment. I had no obligations to anyone. But of course, I missed you both terribly. (She paused for a moment, wiping away her tears.) Sometimes, people need time alone. If anyone could understand that, it's you.

Maddy swung her metal bat against Stacy's arm. A scream tore from her throat. The pain was excruciating, she felt like her arm would be ripped off. But she didn't stop. She kept signing with her remaining hand, doubling its effort.
— I've never fallen in love with anyone, and I want to know what that feels like. I want to go wherever I please, do whatever I want, but I never had that choice. I stayed with you, Maddy, but all you ever did was push me away, again and again. So no, I didn't leave, I ran away ! I want to be happy too ! I want to laugh too ! I clung to memories of a past that has been gone for so long. Emilie isn't the only one who died back then, you did too ! And for once in my life, I want to be selfish, like Emilie was that day, like you are. I freed myself from the chains of our friendship. But you… you're still stuck in the same place as a year ago !
— Shut up ! You don't understand anything. I'm not selfish, I'm doing this for Emilie.
— But Emilie isn't here anymore. You said it yourself. You don't even feel her presence.
— She's waiting for us somewhere. She has to be ! Otherwise, I'll never get the chance to tell her how I felt about her !

Stacy couldn't finish her sentence, her hands were shaking too much.
— That's right. It's time for us to join her !
Maddy swung her bat horizontally with all her might, aiming for Stacy's head. But at the last second, Stacy instinctively dropped to the ground, covering her head in terror. Caught off guard, Maddy lost her grip on the bat, which went flying several meters away. Furious, she lunged at Stacy and began strangling her instead.
The two boys, who had been watching the scene unfold, couldn't stay idle any longer. After all, they were about to lose their source of entertainment.

One of them tried to restrain her. He was physically strong and managed to pin her down, preventing her from struggling. But Maddy, willing to do anything to achieve her goal, sank her teeth deep into his right arm, tearing out a chunk of flesh. Blood gushed into her mouth, making her look like a ravenous vampire.

The second boy, horrified, yanked his friend away and decided they had had enough. This game was definitely not worth it.
