Chapter 1 - Deciding to Get Married

"Who would want to marry a woman like that? I'm just playing around. Once I reel her in, I'll dump her!"

Jessie Moore stood outside the hospital room, listening to her boyfriend accusing her nonstop inside.

The moment she heard he got into an accident, she rushed over immediately. On the way there, she ran into a lost old man near the hospital. After learning he was going to the same destination, she decided to give him a ride, which caused some delay.

She never expected that this short delay would lead her to witness such a scene.

"Jessie’s so pretty, but I didn’t expect her to be so conservative.”

"We've been dating for a year, but she still won’t even kiss me! I should drug her next time. Anyway, I've already hooked up with the boss’s daughter.”

Hearing the conversation inside, Jessie felt her body go cold. She pushed the door open without hesitation.

Seeing her, her boyfriend was surprised. She turned around and ran, while he hobbled behind her on his crutch.

"Jessie! Wait, listen to me—"

The people passing by all watched the scene unfold. Her boyfriend grabbed her wrist and snapped at her. "How long are you going to make a scene? Come back with me!"

Embarrassed by the attention, he tried to drag her away.

"Didn’t you just call me conservative?"

He paled, not expecting her to have heard everything.

"Then let me show you—I can kiss anyone I want, just not you!"

With that, she grabbed a repairman passing by with a ladder. Giving him no time to react, she hugged his neck and kissed him.

"Jessie! Are you crazy?! He’s just some lowly repairman! You really have no standards!"

It was her first time kissing someone, and his soft lips made her a little shy. However, she refused to back down.

"That’s right! I’ve had enough of you for a while now. Today, I’m the one dumping you."

Her boyfriend’s face flushed red with anger. He muttered a few curses before storming off.

As he disappeared from view, Jessie burst into tears as the hurt and betrayal came crashing down.

"Alright, stop crying."

A deep voice spoke. She looked up to a pair of clear, piercing eyes. The man’s lips were stained with her lipstick. His upper body openly displayed strong muscles and a perfectly sculpted V-line. His tanned skin exuded an overwhelming masculine charm.

She quickly wiped her tears as she said, "I’m sorry..."

Suddenly, she heard a familiar voice.

"My dear grandson! I’ve been looking for you everywhere!"

An old man walked over, smacking the man hard using his cane. Then, he noticed Jessie sitting on the ground and immediately brightened up.

"Aren’t you the kind young lady who helped me get here? Why are you crying?"

"She got tricked by a scumbag," the man said flatly, glancing at her.

However, the old man beamed and clapped his hands. "Perfect! No need to cry. Look at my grandson—what do you think of him?"

Following his gesture, Jessie’s gaze inadvertently landed on the man’s torso again. Her face flushed as she quickly looked away.

"What’s your name?" the old man asked with a smile.

"Jessie Moore."

"Jessie... So, Jess. That’s a wonderful name! It matches just right with my grandson’s!" The old man pushed at the man beside him. "Why are you just standing there? Your future wife’s on the ground—go help her up and comfort her!"

The man remained silent, but he held out a hand toward her.

Still overwhelmed by everything, Jessie stared blankly between the two.

"Grandpa, I—"

Before she could finish, the old man cut her off.

"I know, I know. You two just met, so you still need time to develop feelings..." His sentence was cut short as he suddenly gasped. "Kevin! What happened to your lips?!"

"Someone kissed me just now," the man said casually, glancing at Jessie.

The old man gave them both a knowing look, his smile widening.

"Good, good! Looks like I’ll get a great-grandchild soon."

At this point, Jessie had given up explaining.

"Grandpa, you just got discharged. You should go home and rest," the man said gently. After sending the old man away, he finally turned to face Jessie.

"It’s nice to meet you. I’m Kevin Harper."

"I’m Jessie," she replied, nodding politely.

Kevin took a deep breath, his face turning serious. "Now, let’s talk about what happened today."

His sudden change stunned her. Just a moment ago, he had been so respectful to his grandfather—why was he being so cold to her now?

"You went too far just now. I don’t know why Grandpa likes you so much, but since he mentioned marriage, I hope you’ll consider it seriously."

Jessie froze.

She knew being conservative had its benefits, but she also felt guilty for suddenly kissing him without permission.

He continued, "Don’t worry. If we get married, I won’t touch you. It’s just a marriage on paper. I’ll even send you money every month—you can use it however you like. What do you think?"

His offer was tempting, but the idea of marrying a stranger still felt far too sudden.

Just as she was about to refuse, her phone rang.

The moment she answered, a furious voice roared from the other end.

"Jessie! Did you really break up?! How dare you cheat! You’re not getting any younger, you know. If you don’t get married soon, nobody will want you! Really, why can’t you make my life easier? Listen up—we can’t afford to support you any longer! Either you go and apologize, get married, or get out of my house as soon as possible!"

Her stepfather, William Krut, was on the other line.

Jessie bit her lip so hard it almost bled, completely humiliated.

Due to her conservatism, none of her past relationships had lasted long. She thought she would finally marry this one, but in the end, it was all an illusion.

Seeing her silence, Kevin simply ended the call for her. He raised an eyebrow and looked at her.

"So? If you don’t mind marrying a mere repairman, would you consider it?"

She was in turmoil as she gazed at his handsome face.

Finally, she made up her mind.

"Alright. I’ll marry you."
