Chapter 7 - Getting Along

Jessie understood that although Kevin was scolding her, he was actually worried about her safety.

She nodded in agreement.

Even if he didn’t say it, she wouldn’t go out drinking again.

She was aware enough of her own safety.

Seeing her agreeing, his expression softened a bit.

He didn't forget to remind her, "By the way, the living room is a public area. Don't sleep here next time."

"Alright." The memory of him carrying her to bed in his arms last night flashed in her mind.

She suddenly understood something new about her husband; he was an upright person.

Otherwise, given last night's situation, things would have escalated, and they would have had sex as a new couple is supposed to do.

Kevin was unaware of her thoughts, but he did notice she had organized her stuff in the guest room. He was satisfied with her decision to sleep separately in two rooms.

After all, he didn’t want to fulfill any husbandly duties.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked after finishing breakfast, noticing Jessie staring into space.

He couldn't say he liked her a lot, but he inherently thought she was a deep schemer.

Otherwise, why would Grandpa Harper deem her worthy of marrying into the Harpers after just one look?

She definitely must have used some means, using Grandpa Harper’s old age to convince him.

He wasn’t going to reveal his true identity to her until she passed his test.

On the other hand, Jessie didn’t know of all the drama going on in Kevin’s mind.

She was simply thinking of how to design some new desserts for her shop.

After she had explained to him, Kevin saw the honesty in her eyes. Realizing he had misunderstood, he felt a bit guilty.

"I’m sorry."

"What for?" Jessie furrowed her brows, looking at him curiously.

Why was he suddenly apologizing?

Of course, he wasn’t going to tell her the truth.

He casually wiped his hands with a tissue from the table.

Seeing this, she chose not to ask any further.

"Will you be home for dinner tonight? If you will, I can make more dishes."

This was his house, after all; it was only right for her to take more household jobs.

Kevin didn't refuse.

Back at his own place, he usually hired help for chores. Now that he was living with Jessie, he couldn't do that.

Besides, she was pretty good at cooking, and he wasn't too picky about food.

On the other hand, Jessie took his silence as an agreement and began clearing the table in front of her.

"By the way, is there anything you don't like to eat or are allergic to? Or should I call later in the evening to confirm what you’d like for dinner? I can prepare it afterward."

Kevin replied coldly, "No need. I don't eat spicy food, but I'm not picky with anything else. Don’t call me; I’m busy with work and don’t have time for silly questions. If something comes up, I'll let you know in advance."

"Ok." Jessie pouted, not saying anything else.

She noticed the balcony was empty, getting an idea and turning to him.

"I want to plant some flowers and plants on the balcony. Also, I want to put a small cabinet in the living room for miscellaneous things and books. What do you think? I won’t do it if you don’t agree."

She looked at him sincerely.

Since this was his house, she should discuss major changes like this with him first and foremost.

"No need to check with me over such small matters. Do whatever you like; just don't enter my room."

He had too much work to be answering such small questions from Jessie all the time.

As long as she didn't trespass his privacy, she could do anything she wished.

"Alright." Jessie smiled, deciding to go to the market in the afternoon to buy some flowers.

She particularly liked tulips, thinking they’d look great on the balcony.

After that, she could just sit there to enjoy the sun and breeze, with the tulips by her side.

"By the way, Grandpa said he wants to have dinner with you this weekend so he could introduce you to our family’s elders. You can invite your parents, too; it’s just a face-to-face family meeting for the first time."

Hearing this, Jessie instinctively tightened her grip on her clothes.

Her mother had been busy with the children and housework lately; she wasn't sure if she had time.

Moreover, if her stepfather found out, he would probably stop her from going.

"Did you hear me?"

Seeing her not responding, Kevin slightly furrowed his brows.

He realized that his new wife often liked to drift off into her thoughts.

Though he didn't know what she was pondering, he hated it when people didn't answer him immediately.

It was a waste of his time.

Jessie snapped out of her thoughts and apologized, "Sorry. I don't know if they'll be free, so I can't answer you now. I’ll tell you after I ask them first, okay?"

"Alright. It’s fine if they can’t come; just you being there is quite enough," Kevin said indifferently.

He mainly wanted to fulfill Grandpa Harper’s task.

Jessie nodded, not saying much more.

Before leaving for work, Kevin took a bank card out of his suit pocket and handed it to her.

"This is my salary card; you can keep it. You will receive money every month, so you can use this card on whatever you want to buy. Just let me know what you bought, no matter how much you spent on them."

Kevin had mentioned that since they were married, it was his obligation to take care of her.

Besides, he had so much money and wealth that he couldn't even keep track of it all. He had no problem with her spending some of it.

However, he wasn't naive enough to let her spend money unsupervised. He still didn’t trust her enough.

Jessie’s face darkened at his words.

She frowned at him, pushing the card back.

"I don't need your card.”

She now had a shop of her own, bringing in enough income to cover her daily expenses, so she didn’t need his money. However, the main reason she refused was that his words made it seem like he thought she was only after his wealth—especially since he expected her to account for every penny.

"Why?" Kevin raised an eyebrow.

He assumed she was just putting up a front.

Jessie took a deep breath and replied, "Mr. Harper, since we're married, I can earn my money and contribute to the household expenses as well. Besides, you work as a repairman; it isn’t easy to make money, so you can keep it to yourself."

After that, she walked into her room, got ready to change clothes, and went to check on her shop.

Kevin realized after some seconds that he might have hurt her feelings with his attitude.

"Wait a moment."

"Is there anything else, Mr. Harper?" Jessie’s reply didn’t sound very friendly.

She didn’t really want to talk with him anymore, but she reminded herself that this was his house, so she needed to be patient.

He pressed the card back into her hand and said, "I’m sorry, I didn’t express myself properly. You’re right; we should share the expenses since we’re married. I don’t have time to manage the money, and I trust you more, so it’s better if you keep it for family savings. What do you think?"

He looked down at her face, waiting for her response.
