Chapter 14 - 14. Running

I gained some distance from the wolves, but I wasn't built to run. There's no way I'm gonna be able to outrun them. Even if I could, they have far more stamina than me. If I get away they may follow me back to my home. That brings along more problems than I like to think about. At the moment there are 7 wolves chasing me.

'I can use my flying ice skill around 2 - 3 times until I'm incapacitated. That will kill 4 - 6 wolves at most. It's more likely 2 would die. I can form a weapon and fight them, but a 1 v 7 isn't exactly in my favor.'

With my mind running, I think of the next best thing? Have someone else fight my battles. It's a well known fact that bears and wolves don't get along. With that in mind I just need to find the bear. The only problem is I have no idea where the bear is. And the wolves aren't just going to chase me, they will bite at my legs.

'I can cover my legs in ice, but that will also slow me down due to the added weight. Wait a second, I remember seeing a flower with thorns before. If I simply cover myself with ice and needles what can the wolves do about it? That brings up the time and concentration it takes to do that.'

I look around for anything that can potentially help me. Seeing nothing I can't help but be a little disappointed. With the wolves merely a couple meters behind me I'm not really gonna have a choice but to fight them.

"Spear it is."

As I continue to run I start to cover my hands in ice and I start to form a spear. Since I need to make it strong enough not to break and sharp enough to cut it takes a good deal of focus. Soon enough I completely formed the ice spear. Just as I complete it my eyes dilate.

I quickly bend back and fall back first into the snow. Instead of a sharp pain I feel drained. My body sinks into the snow a bit as I stare up at the massive white bear. It's not looking at me but the wolves that were following me.

*Deep Growl

The bear grows causing the wolves to growl back. They stare at one another while seeming to decide what to do. The bear charges at the wolves who quickly back up. With the bear no longer above me I slowly get up. My vision is a little blurry and my balance is off. I look at the bear and wolves before turning in the other direction. I walk slowly at first, but soon enough it becomes a jog.

'The bear wasn't protecting me, more like now paying attention to me. I wasted my energy on making that spear though. Either way I doubt the bear will just let the wolves walk on past it. This is its territory as far as I'm aware. It wouldn't just let them hunt on its grounds.'

I slow down as my breathing grows heavy. I drag my feet through the snow. I can barely hear anything as I start losing my senses. At some point I fall to my knees. My body shakes a bit, not only from the cold, but from the overexertion of my body. I look around with blurry eyes and crawl slowly over to a tree.

I barely managed to crawl through the hole leading into the somewhat hollow tree. In the cramped space my body completely laxes as I close my eyes. The after effects of making such a spear in such a tense situation, and then having to trudge through the snow was too much for my body.

The late evening passed quickly. The night soon followed alongside the morning. When I opened my eyes I could barely see in the dark trunk.

*Groan

I sit up and lean against the trunk. I squint my eyes as the light enters my eyes. After a couple seconds my eyes adjust and I look out of the hole. The trees covered in snow and the cloud covered sky is all I see. I simply sat there staring for a couple minutes. The Lower Winter Sprites are floating around peacefully as well. Soon enough I crawl out of the hole.

I walk around for half an hour before finding a berry bush. I eat almost all the berries on it before setting off back home. I somehow find my way home as I crawl down. I place my door in position as I lay down. I relax as I close my eyes. I soon open them as I have a feeling I forgot something.

"Ha. Haha. I dropped the furs at some point. Did I even grab them before running from the wolves? I don't even remember the path I took when I ran. I really hope I didn't take them with me. Animals wouldn't take the fur of an animal right? The snow probably covered them though."

I place my arm over my eyes as I lay in silence. After a couple seconds I sigh and sit up. I feel a bit tired but I have things to do. Sitting around isn't going to get anything done. So I move my door and crawl out. I didn't forget to close the door as I start walking. While walking I didn't have anything in particular on my mind.

As I walk I take in the sights around me. Sure everything was beautiful, but I feel something else. Something that has nothing to do with what I'm seeing. The falling snow, the cold breeze, the nearby animals. Everything feels like something more. It's almost like something is connecting them all together.

Its these thoughts that seem to click something in my mind. My eyes widen as my heart speeds up. I stop as I look forward. I see something I missed before.
