[ JINICHI WATARU ]
We arrived in the Land of Tea exactly two days before the grand gala was scheduled to begin. The coastal breeze carried the scent of saltwater and roasting spices, washing over us as we walked through the bustling streets. It was my first time outside the Land of Fire, and the sheer scale of the port city was completely overwhelming to take in.
Aoi and Kisuke were visibly awestruck, their eyes darting rapidly across the vibrant marketplace. Towering paper lanterns illuminated the evening sky, casting a warm glow over the foreign merchants and wealthy nobles preparing for the upcoming festival. The sheer density of people here was nothing like the structured, quiet streets of the Hidden Leaf.
"Keep your eyes forward and your minds sharp," Shohei-sensei murmured, his lazy drone instantly snapping us out of our tourist-like trance.
"We are not here to enjoy the sights; we are on a high-stakes mission. Do not let the festive atmosphere distract you from the fact that an enemy could be hiding in plain sight."
We swiftly booked a modest inn located a few streets away from the main commercial district to keep a low profile. The wooden floorboards creaked under my sandals as we inspected the perimeter, ensuring there were no blind spots in the immediate vicinity. Tension hung thick in the air, heavily contrasting the cheerful music echoing from the streets outside.
"I'm going ahead to scout the gala location and reach out to Kazuto regarding our arrival," Shohei-sensei announced, casually adjusting his flak jacket before turning to us.
"You three are tasked with guarding Tenka's room until I return, so set up your defensive maneuvers and stay alert. Prioritize the client's safety above all else."
Taking my position in the dim hallway outside Tenka's door, I settled into a defensive stance beside Aoi and Kisuke. The silence of the inn was deafening, broken only by the distant, muffled sounds of the city's nightlife bleeding through the thin walls. I kept my breathing steady, my hand resting firmly on the hilt of my kunai.
Kisuke knelt near the floorboards, pulling out a spool of ultra-thin, nearly invisible wire from his pouch. His hands moved with practiced, methodical precision as he strung the trap across the hallway to secure our perimeter. He anchored the main line directly to my index finger, ensuring I would be instantly notified of any disturbance. He then attached a spool of wires to his fingers, in a way that he could easily trigger the wire trap.
"If I trigger the wire, the sudden snap serves as a method of alerting you. If that happens take Tenka-san and regroup with Sensei." Kisuke whispered, stepping back into the shadows to monitor the other floors of the inn. Hours seemed to drag on in agonizing slow motion, the silence of the inn gnawing at my nerves as I stared down the corridor.
!!!!
Suddenly, the wire wrapped around my finger violently twitched. Then came the sharp and aggressive snap that served the connection to my finger and signalled there was an intruder in the lower floors. Aoi had already brought out her kunai. My heart hammered against my ribs as I instantly drew mine, bracing myself for the incoming threat.
A terrifying blur of motion materialized at the far end of the corridor, moving faster than my eyes could accurately track. A masked shinobi stepped into the dim light, his mask covering his face and cloak failing to hide his imposing figure, he was radiating a suffocating, killing intent that froze the air in my lungs. His blade rested by his side.
Aoi was the first to react, rushing forward with a fierce battle cry and launching a high-velocity barrage of kicks aimed at his chest. The masked-nin didn't even flinch, casually swaying out of the way of her first three strikes with terrifying, effortless precision. When she spun for a heavy roundhouse, he simply raised his forearm, blocking the strike with a sickening thud that cracked the floorboards beneath them.
Before Aoi could recover her balance, masked-nin grabbed her ankle, yanked her forward, and delivered a brutal, pinpoint chop to the back of her neck. She crumpled instantly, her body hitting the wooden floorboards with a heavy, lifeless thud that sent a spike of panic through my chest.
Kisuke launched himself from the shadows, throwing a volley of shuriken while simultaneously pulling his hidden wires to bind the swordsman's arms. The masked-nin scoffed, twisting his body to evade the projectiles before grabbing the razor-sharp wire directly with his bare, calloused hand. With a vicious yank, he pulled Kisuke entirely off balance, dragging my teammate straight into his attack range.
The masked-nin stepped into Kisuke's guard and drove a devastating knee deep into his stomach, knocking the air completely from his lungs in a sickening gasp. Kisuke collapsed beside Aoi, utterly incapacitated and gasping for air, leaving me entirely alone to face the monster in the hallway.
I realized the defense was thoroughly compromised. Without hesitation, I threw myself backward, bursting through the sliding door into Tenka's dimly lit room.
"We are under attack! we need to move right now!" I yelled, executing the emergency protocol.
Tenka was trembling violently in the corner, her face pale with absolute terror as the sounds of the struggle echoed inside. I grabbed her arm firmly, pulling her toward the back window just as the sliding door behind us splintered into pieces. There was no time to fight; my only objective was to transport her to the designated safe house.
We crashed through the wooden window frame, tumbling out into the cool night air and landing hard on the ceramic roof tiles. The moonlight bathed the rooftops in a pale, ghostly glow as I dragged Tenka to her feet, and carried her in my arms. Every muscle in my body screamed with adrenaline as I sprinted across the uneven skyline.
My breath hitched as we leaped over a narrow alleyway, the sounds of the festive city far below drowning out our frantic footsteps. I kept my eyes locked on the distant silhouette of the safe house, praying we could make it before our pursuer caught up. But the heavy, oppressive killing intent suddenly flared right behind me.
The masked-nin landed directly in our path, his boots cracking the ceramic tiles beneath him with the sheer force of his impact. He had completely cut off our escape route, standing tall against the moonlight like an unstoppable force of nature. He slowly drew his sword from its sheath, the steel whispering a deadly, terrifying promise.
"You possess good instincts for a child, but this is where your mission ends," The masked-nin warned, his deep voice carrying no malice, only cold certainty.
"Leave the girl here and run back to your village while you still have your life. If you stand in my way, I will not hesitate to cut you down."
I refused to back down, tightening my grip on my kunai and stepping firmly between the terrifying swordsman and a sobbing Tenka.
"I am a shinobi of the Leaf," I spat back, ignoring the violent trembling in my own hands.
"I will never abandon my mission, and I will protect her with my life!"
I lunged forward, channelling every ounce of speed I possessed into a desperate, horizontal slash aimed at his unguarded torso. The masked-nin, didn't even step back; he merely flicked his wrist, parrying my kunai with the flat of his heavy blade. The sheer physical feedback of the block vibrated up my arm, completely numbing my fingers in a single instant.
Using the momentum, I dropped low to the tiles, attempting to sweep his legs, but he countered by bringing the heavy pommel of his sword down on my back. My ribs cracked under the immense pressure, forcing a ragged scream from my lungs as I was driven flat against the roof. I rolled desperately away, trying to create distance, but he was already standing over me.
"Then die with your hollow convictions," The masked-nin muttered, his eyes narrowing as he gripped the hilt of his sword with both hands. He vanished from my sight in a blinding burst of pure speed, utilizing the Shunshin jutsu to close the final gap. I tried to pivot, trying to bring my weapon up to parry, but I was tragically too slow.
A flash of cold silver illuminated the darkness, accompanied by the sickening sound of tearing flesh and shattering bone. I looked down, my vision blurring as I watched Takizo's blade protrude directly through my chest, having pierced straight through my heart. The world instantly went cold, the strength bleeding rapidly out of my limbs.
I collapsed onto the tiles, my vision fading into an abyss of black as the horrific reality of death consumed me. Then, with a soft poof, the terrifying perspective shattered completely, transferring the dying memory directly into my actual brain. I gasped, clinging tightly to the cold ceramic of the chimney stack I was transformed into, my real heart hammering wildly.
Aoi, Kisuke, and I had each utilized our newly learned Shadow Clone Jutsu to create perfect replicas of ourselves to act as the bait. Watching my own clone get brutally stabbed through the heart sent a profound, nauseating shiver down my actual spine. If we hadn't executed the trap flawlessly, we would truly be dead right now.
Tenka that my clone had been protecting screamed in absolute horror, falling to her knees. She begged the swordsman for mercy, acting completely terrified as the masked-nin, locked his cold eyes onto his weeping target. He formed a single hand seal, utilizing the Shunshin jutsu to flicker instantly behind her.
As the masked-nin raised the hilt of his sword to strike the back of her neck, a thick black line surged rapidly across the roof. The shadow stretched impossibly fast under the moonlight, snapping directly onto the masked-nin boots and freezing him entirely in place.
"Shadow Possession Jutsu, complete," Tenka said, her voice suddenly dropping into a deep, familiar masculine drawl.
A thick cloud of smoke erupted around the client, blowing away in the wind to reveal Shohei-sensei standing exactly where Tenka had been. Takezo's eyes widened in genuine surprise, realizing he had been completely outplayed by a layered transformation and clone trap. His muscles strained violently, trying to break the invisible, paralyzing hold of the Nara clan jutsu.
Shohei-sensei moved his arm, The masked-nin's hand followed suit, he removed his mask, revealing the identity of the assailant.
"You walked right into it, Takezo." Shohei-sensei muttered, maintaining the hand seal. Takezo glared at him with unadulterated rage.
!!!!!!
Suddenly, a tiny, impossibly fast silhouette dropped from the sky directly into Shohei-sensei's blind spot. It was a masked ninja, no larger than a child, clutching a serrated trench knife aimed straight at our sensei's neck.
"Well done, Rin." I heard Takezo mutter with a small smile.
We didn't hesitate for a single second; the three of us simultaneously released our transformation jutsu, materializing from the surrounding roof structures. Aoi, Kisuke, and I launched a coordinated, high-velocity volley of shuriken at the airborne child. The sudden barrage forced Rin to contort mid-air, abandoning the lethal strike to deflect our weapons.
"Formation B! Draw him away from sensei's blind spot!" Kisuke commanded sharply, seamlessly stepping up and taking the mantle of tactical leadership.
"Jinichi, Aoi, flank him left and right! Keep the pressure on and do not let him interfere with the Jonin's fight!"
Aoi and I followed Kisuke's precise orders immediately, rushing the child rogue nin and pushing him back across the neighbouring rooftops. The rogue ninja was terrifyingly agile, backflipping away from my sweeping kick and deflecting Aoi's immediate follow-up punch with his forearm. The kid fought like a seasoned killer, his movements completely devoid of any wasted energy.
I stepped into his guard, unleashing a rapid barrage of close-quarters strikes, but Rin parried each one with the flat of his trench knife. Aoi flanked him perfectly, driving a fierce, spinning heel kick toward his temple. Rin ducked completely underneath her leg and maliciously slashed his blade upward toward her exposed thigh.
I threw myself forward, violently clashing my kunai against his trench knife to block the strike just inches from Aoi's leg. The sparks illuminated Rin's cold, dead eyes as he used my momentum to launch himself backward into the air. But Kisuke was already waiting for him, pulling a hidden sequence of wires he had strung up during our brief skirmish.
The razor-thin wires snapped tight around the boys ankles, abruptly halting his backward trajectory and leaving him suspended upside down. Realizing he was completely outmatched by our coordinated tactical pressure, the boy pulled a spherical object from his pouch. He slammed it hard against his own blade, and a massive, thick plume of purple smoke exploded outward.
By the time the wind cleared the noxious smoke away, the wires had been cut, leaving the rooftop completely empty, the child having vanished into the sprawling city below. We coughed, regaining our bearings, realizing the accomplice had successfully escaped Kisuke's wire trap. Now, our attention desperately snapped back to the roof to check on our instructor's fight.

I watched as my three Genin, operated with efficiency, under Kisuke's sharp tactical command, successfully bait the child assassin away and secure my flank. But my mind was racing with deeply unsettling questions about this unexpected ambush.
'An accomplice? And a child named Rin, no less? The underground rumours stating Takezo strictly worked alone were entirely wrong.'
My brief distraction was exactly the opening my monstrous opponent needed to turn the tides of the battle. With a terrifying roar of pure, unadulterated exertion, Takezo flared his chakra aggressively, forcing his massive muscles to move against my jutsu. The shadow binding connecting us trembled violently before shattering completely under the sheer weight of his physical strength.
I immediately abandoned my hand seals, drawing my kunai's as Takezo closed the distance in the blink of an eye. Our blades clashed with a thunderous shockwave, the ceramic tiles beneath my feet instantly turning to dust under the immense pressure. I slid backward, my arms burning from the sheer force of his heavy sword pressing against my guard.
Takezo didn't give me a single second to recover, unleashing a relentless, sweeping barrage of horizontal slashes designed to cut me in half. I ducked low, weaving under his blade, and attempted to drive my kunai directly into his exposed ribs. He effortlessly twisted his torso, allowing my strike to glance off his armour before bringing his sword crashing down in a devastating vertical arc.
I crossed my kunai's to block, but the sheer force of the impact drove me entirely to my knees, cracking the roof beneath me.
The sword cuts through with deadly accuracy.
[ *POOF*]
But it simply slashes through a roofing tile.
Reappearing in a different position I begin to weave the hand signs to summon Kuro.
However, Takezo calmly sheathed his sword, the metallic click echoing loudly over the ambient noise of the distant festival. He recognized that his element of surprise was completely gone and that fighting a prepared Jonin and three returning Genin was strategically foolish. He took a calculated step backward toward the edge of the roof, merging seamlessly with the deep shadows.
"You have bought her another night, Leaf Shinobi, but you cannot protect her from the storm that is coming," Takezo warned, his voice cold.
"A bastard daughter born of the Daimyo's trusted advisor is a prize too valuable for the underworld to simply ignore. I will return, and I will claim the prize the merchant demands."
Before I could throw another shadow to bind him, he utilized the Shunshin jutsu once more, disappearing entirely into the sprawling, moonlit city. I stood up slowly, sheathing my kunai's as the heavy weight of his parting words crashed over me like a tidal wave.
'The Advisor's illegitimate daughter?'
A cold sweat broke out across my brow as the pieces of this supposedly simple C-rank mission rapidly fell into place. We weren't just guarding a tailor; we were actively holding a political powder keg that could ignite a devastating war.
I looked over at my three Genin rushing back toward me, realizing our lives had just become infinitely more complicated.
