Chapter 24 - INFILTRATING A GALA [ 20 ]

A/N: Please can you guys leave reviews for the story? thank you.

[ JINICHI WATARU ]

Two days had passed since the blood-chilling ambush on the rooftops of the Land of Tea, but the adrenaline had yet to completely leave my system. The high-speed clash against and his child accomplice.

Despite the intensity of the battle, we had miraculously emerged relatively unscathed. Aoi, Kisuke, and I sported only a few minor scrapes and bruises from our frantic skirmish with the agile rogue ninja. Our bodies were sore, but our vital organs were blessedly intact.

Shohei-sensei had fared similarly, despite taking on a legendary swordsman in single combat. He had a shallow, bandaged cut on his shoulder and a few scrapes where Takezo's immense physical strength had grazed his guard, but nothing serious enough to hinder his movement.

Now, however, the suffocating tension inside the hidden safe house was thicker than the humidity outside. We had successfully relocated Tenka to a more secure location following the rooftop battle, but the atmosphere in the small, dimly lit room was intensely volatile.

Shohei-sensei stood by the barred window, the shadows of the wooden slats casting dark lines across his usually relaxed face. All traces of his signature lazy demeanor had completely vanished, replaced by the cold, calculating edge of a veteran Jonin who realized he had been led into a trap.

He turned his gaze away from the bustling city streets outside and locked his dark eyes directly onto Tenka, who was seated rigidly at the small wooden table in the center of the room.

"I need the full truth, right now," Shohei-sensei demanded, his voice dangerously low and devoid of any warmth.

"We were hired for a standard C-rank escort mission for a tailor. But an underground legend like Takezo does not hunt simple tailors."

Tenka flinched, pulling her shawl tighter around her shoulders, her eyes darting nervously between her hands.

"I am responsible for the lives of these three Genin," Shohei-sensei continued, stepping away from the window and towering over the table.

"I will not march my students blindly into a political warzone without knowing exactly who we are fighting for. If you do not tell me the truth right now, we will abandon this mission and return to the Leaf."

Aoi, Kisuke, and I exchanged wide-eyed, silent glances. We were completely surprised by the sudden, harsh ultimatum. Shinobi were taught to complete the mission above all else, but hearing our sensei threaten to walk away solely to prioritize our safety sent a complicated mix of shock and profound respect through my chest.

None of us protested against his threat. We remained perfectly still, standing by the door, waiting for the client to finally break.

Tenka squeezed her eyes shut, a stray tear escaping and trailing down her pale cheek. Her hands trembled violently against the wooden table as the crushing weight of her secret finally proved too heavy to bear.

"My father is not a merchant with connections to the Advisor" she whispered, her voice cracking under the strain. She looked up, her red-rimmed eyes meeting Shohei's intense glare. "He is the Advisor. His name is Kazuto. The chief advisor to the Daimyo of the Land of Fire."

The revelation hit the room like a physical shockwave. My jaw practically unhinged, and I saw Kisuke's eyes narrow sharply as his strategic mind rapidly calculated the immense political gravity of that statement. We had suspected she was hiding something, but the illegitimate daughter of the Daimyo's right-hand man was beyond our wildest theories.

Tenka let out a ragged breath, the dam finally breaking as she poured out the harrowing details of her past. She explained that she had been living a quiet, peaceful life with her mother in a remote, unnamed village deep within the Land of Fire, completely hidden from the vicious political landscape of the capital.

"We were happy," she sobbed, her voice echoing off the bare walls of the safe house.

"But then the kidnapping happened. A rival faction discovered who I was and hired thugs to take me and use me as leverage against my father."

She wiped her eyes, her shoulders shaking. "I was rescued by a man who lived in our village. A mercenary. I thought he was just a local tradesman, but my father had secretly placed him there years ago solely to protect us."

Her tears flowed freely now, dripping onto the wooden table.

"He saved me from the thugs, but he was gravely injured in the fight. He used the last of his strength to smuggle me out of the village and get me to the borders of the Hidden Leaf to issue the mission... but he died from his wounds before he could see it through."

The heavy silence that followed her tragic confession was deafening. Shohei-sensei exhaled a long, measured breath, reaching up to rub the back of his neck as the political puzzle pieces locked into place. Kazuto had issued the mission anonymously through the merchant guild to ensure she was delivered to him safely without drawing the attention of his political rivals.

"This changes everything," Shohei-sensei finally said, turning to face Aoi, Kisuke, and me.

"This is no longer a C-rank escort. This is an A-rank political extraction. The risk of death on this mission has just multiplied tenfold."

He looked each of us strictly in the eyes.

"It is not too late to back out. You are fresh Genin, and I will not force you to fight against A-rank assassins. If you want to return to the village, I will escort you back myself."

I looked at Aoi, who was already clenching her fists with quiet determination, and then at Kisuke, who simply gave a firm, resolute nod. I grinned, crossing my arms over my chest to hide the lingering nervous flutter in my stomach.

"We're not going anywhere," I said confidently, leaning against the doorframe. I shot my instructor a smirk. "Plus, that's why we have you, sensei. You wouldn't let us go to our early graves without a fight."

Shohei-sensei paused, staring at my grinning face for a long moment before a tiny, almost imperceptible smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth.

"Cheeky brat," he muttered, shaking his head. He turned back to the table, his lazy drawl returning.

"Alright. Let's plan our infiltration."

[ KISUKE YOROI]

The grand gala in the Land of Tea was a tactical nightmare, an ocean of blind spots disguised as high-society elegance. The sheer volume of foreign dignitaries, wealthy merchants, and masked performers made maintaining a secure perimeter nearly impossible for a single four-man squad.

We had successfully infiltrated the event by disguising ourselves as Tenka's personal, high-end security detail. I adjusted the stiff lapels of my tailored black suit, my fingers lightly brushing against the hidden senbon strapped to my forearms beneath the expensive fabric.

Aoi walked slightly ahead of me, looking incredibly rigid and uncomfortable in her formal attire. Her eyes darted aggressively at anyone who stepped within a three-foot radius of our client. Jinichi flanked Tenka's right side, his shoulders easily parting the sea of mingling nobles as we pushed deeper into the opulent venue.

Shohei-sensei led the formation, flawlessly acting the part of a seasoned head of security. He guided us through the towering archways, past the cascading champagne towers and the string quartet, moving with silent purpose toward the VIP residential wing located on the second floor.

My eyes constantly scanned the vaulted ceilings and the shadowed archways for any sign of a wire trap or a hidden sniper. If Takezo or his accomplice decided to strike here, the collateral damage would be catastrophic.

We finally reached the heavy oak doors of the designated VIP chamber. Shohei-sensei flashed a specific, predetermined hand signal to the two heavily armed samurai guarding the entrance. They nodded silently, stepping aside to let us pass.

We ushered Tenka into the room, quickly sweeping the corners for any hidden threats. Once the room was cleared, Jinichi, Aoi, and I stepped back out into the extravagant hallway, pulling the heavy oak doors securely shut behind us to give the client her privacy.

[ TENKA NAKAMURA]

The VIP chamber was lavishly decorated with silk banners and golden fixtures, but the extravagant wealth of the room entirely failed to register in my mind. My eyes were instantly locked onto the lone figure standing by the moonlight-bathed balcony.

He wore the luxurious, flowing robes of a high-ranking political official, his hair neatly tied back, his posture impossibly straight. As the heavy wooden doors clicked shut behind me, the man slowly turned around.

Kazuto Yamagishi. The Daimyo's advisor. My father.

It was the very first time in my entire life that I was looking at him in person. The man whose blood ran through my veins had always been nothing more than a ghost, a whispered secret between my mother and me in the dead of night.

"Tenka," he breathed out, his voice trembling as he took a hesitant step forward, his eyes desperately scanning my face as if searching for fragments of my mother in my features.

I had spent the last two days trying to build a wall around my heart, trying to mentally prepare myself for this exact moment. I wanted to be strong, to be stoic, to show him that I didn't need him. But the moment he spoke my name, the fragile emotional dam inside my chest completely shattered.

My knees buckled, and I collapsed onto the plush carpet, burying my face in my hands. A raw, agonizing wail tore from my throat as the sheer terror, exhaustion, and grief of the past week finally swallowed me whole.

I screamed in frustration, my voice hoarse as I cried out for my mother, wishing desperately that I was back in our tiny, quiet home instead of standing in this gilded cage.

"Why?" I sobbed, looking up at him through a blinding veil of tears.

"Why couldn't you just leave politics behind you? Why couldn't we just live a normal life together?"

The image of the mercenary—the gruff, quiet man who used to fix our roof and share tea with us, the man who was secretly my only shield against a cruel world—flashed brilliantly in my mind.

"He died for you!" I screamed, the pain in my chest feeling as though my heart was actively tearing in two.

"He was my closest friend, and he bled to death on a dirt road because of your secrets!"

Kazuto didn't offer excuses. He didn't try to defend his political ambitions or explain the complexities of his position. The incredibly powerful advisor to the Daimyo simply fell to his knees on the carpet right across from me, tears streaming openly down his weathered face.

He reached out, his hands shaking violently as he gently wrapped his arms around my trembling shoulders, pulling me into a desperate, clinging embrace.

"I am so sorry," he pleaded, his voice breaking into a breathless sob as he buried his face into my shoulder.

"I am so, so sorry, my beautiful girl. Please, forgive me. Please forgive me."

[ JINICHI WATARU ]

Standing guard out in the lavish hallway, the heavy oak doors did very little to muffle the heartbreaking, agonizing sobs echoing from inside the VIP chamber.

I stood completely still, my hands clasped tightly in front of me, staring blankly at the intricate patterns woven into the carpet. Beside me, Aoi had her head bowed, her usually fierce eyes tightly shut as she listened to the raw grief pouring from our client.

Kisuke remained outwardly stoic, his face an unreadable mask, but I noticed the knuckles on his hands had turned completely white from how tightly he was gripping the spool of ninja wire hidden in his pockets.

Shohei-sensei leaned casually against the wall near the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest and his eyes closed, giving the father and daughter the quiet respect and privacy they desperately needed.

Nearly thirty minutes passed in agonizingly slow, muffled sorrow before the heavy oak door finally clicked and slowly creaked open.

Kazuto stepped out into the hallway. His face was red and his eyes were swollen, completely stripping away the intimidating aura of a high-ranking political official, leaving behind only an exhausted, grieving father.

He looked at Shohei-sensei, and then his gaze slowly swept over Aoi, Kisuke, and me. To our absolute shock, the chief advisor to the Land of Fire Daimyo pressed his hands against his thighs and dropped into a deep, incredibly formal bow right in the middle of the hallway.

"Words cannot express the depth of my gratitude to the shinobi of the Hidden Leaf," Kazuto said, his voice thick with emotion, his head bowed low.

"You have protected my entire world when I was completely powerless to do so myself."

He slowly rose from his bow, wiping a stray tear from his eye before his expression hardened back into the resolute mask of a leader.

"I have a secure extraction team arriving at midnight to transport her back to the capital," Kazuto stated, looking directly at Shohei-sensei.

"I have one final request of you all. Please, protect her until the end of the gala event, before she is safely handed over to them."

Shohei-sensei pushed himself off the wall, his dark eyes scanning the bustling gala floor far below us. He gave a single, curt nod, slipping his hands into his pockets.

"Understood. We will hold the line."
