Chapter 31 - Chapter 30: Request for help

The four of them headed toward the village to look for Luffy, while Oliver debated whether to sneak away to buy some Talents.

Meanwhile, in the village, Luffy was relaxing when suddenly a crowd started to gather.

Nojiko was on the ground, bleeding from her stomach, which had drawn the attention of the villagers.

"Nojiko!" Nami shouted, worried about her sister.

"Hey."

"What happened, Gen-san?! What's going on back there?!"

The villagers began asking the town's sheriff.

"The Marines shot her!" Gen responded.

"The Marines shot her?!"

Luffy noticed something was happening, so he went to check it out.

"What happened, Nami? Can I help with anything?" Luffy asked, trying to be of assistance.

"You're still here?!" Nami yelled angrily, grabbing him by the collar. "This has nothing to do with you! Get off this island!"

She pushed him aside and ran toward Arlong Park.

As she ran, she thought about the promise Arlong had made to her and how he had lied about letting her buy her village's freedom with 100 million berries.

"Arlong!" Nami shouted in anger, panting from running so much.

"Well, if it isn't our great cartographer! What happened to your appearance?" Arlong said mockingly.

"The Marines you bribed came to steal my money! What does that mean?!" she shouted furiously.

While Nami glared at the fish-man with hatred, he remained completely calm.

"You said you'd never break a promise when it came to money!" Nami screamed, grabbing him by the shirt.

"But I'm keeping my promise. When did I ever break it?" Arlong asked.

"Don't play dumb! You gave money to the Marines!" she shouted in fury, but before she could finish speaking, Arlong grabbed her by the mouth.

"When did I break my promise? Tell me!" Arlong said with a grin.

"You're the worst!" Nami yelled, tears streaming down her face.

Arlong and the rest of the fish-men started laughing at Nami's situation.

'Damn you! Damn you!' Nami thought as she cried.

"The Marines took your money? What bad luck. But the promise still stands," Arlong said, while at the same time, the Marines were leaving the village with the money.

"If you don't bring me 100 million berries, I can't let the village go. It's just 100 million berries," he said mockingly. "Just gather them again!"

"Arlong!" Nami cried out in despair.

"This is my gift to our cartographer," Arlong said, releasing her and handing her a bundle of money. "Take it. We're nakamas, aren't we?"

"You can take it, there's no need to hold back. It's your beloved money," Arlong said, smiling.

"Bastard!" Nami insulted him.

"Or will you simply run away? But if you do, the entire village of Cocoyashi will die because of you!" Arlong threatened.

At that moment, Nami remembered Gen's words—that they had always known she was trying to free Cocoyashi Village.

"Damn it! Damn it! Damn it! Damn it!" Nami screamed before running out of Arlong Park toward Cocoyashi.

"What's wrong, Nami? Are you finally going to run away?" Arlong said, watching her leave. "Shahahahaha!"

"Truly a well-thought-out plan," Chew remarked.

"I can't let such a skilled cartographer slip away. But I'm not a demon," Arlong said as he got up from his chair. "Once she finishes mapping the world, I'll set her free."

"That will take years!" a fish-man commented, as the others laughed.

While in Cocoyashi Village, all the villagers were armed and ready.

"That's enough! Grab your weapons, we're going to fight!" Genzo shouted, gripping a weapon.

"YES!" all the citizens shouted.

"We're not going to accept being controlled by them anymore!"

"Let's go!"

The villagers started shouting, ready to fight.

"It was eight years ago that we said we wouldn't throw our lives away! That no matter the abuse we had to endure, as long as Nami was safe, we would continue our resistance! But this is how they repay us?!" Genzo shouted angrily. "We will not allow them to trample on Nami's kindness! Does anyone disagree?!"

"No one! Let's go!" the citizens shouted.

"Wait, guys!" Nami yelled, arriving completely out of breath.

"Nami!" Nojiko said, looking at her sister.

"Wait, just wait a little longer!" she pleaded with a fake smile. "I'll try again! I'll gather the money again! It'll be easier now! I have more experience!"

As she spoke, Genzo looked at Nami with deep sadness.

"You don't have to worry. Listen to me, everyone, I'm fine! I'm fine, so… compared to those times—"

Before she could continue, Genzo stopped her, pulling her into an embrace.

"That's enough. I know this is pointless. You've fought enough for us. For you, it must have been hard to join them. You did well," Genzo comforted her.

"Gen-san…" Nami cried as she listened to him.

"Now leave this island."

Nami was about to protest, but Nojiko interrupted her.

"You have knowledge, and you have a dream to fulfill," her sister told her.

"Nojiko!" Nami shouted.

"Nami…"

"Na-chan…"

"Stop it, guys!" Nami pulled out a knife and pointed it at them while breathing heavily. "You won't pass! I don't want anyone to get hurt!"

"You'll die," she said, her voice breaking.

"We know," Genzo replied as he grabbed the knife with his hand.

"Nami," he said, tears in his eyes as he looked at his little sister.

"Move, Nami!" Genzo shouted, pushing her aside. "Let's go, guys! Even if we don't win, we'll show them our pride!"

All the villagers ran towards Arlong.

Nami, unsure of what to do, fell to her knees, powerless in the situation. She touched the Arlong Pirates' tattoo, remembering all the suffering caused by the bastard who had now betrayed her.

"Arlong!" She grabbed the knife and started stabbing the tattoo.

"Arlong! Arlong! Arlong! Arlong!"

With each word that left her mouth, she drove the knife into her shoulder. The sound of Nami's flesh being pierced was clear, and Luffy, who had been standing behind her, couldn't stay still any longer. He stopped her.

"Luffy…" Nami let go of the knife, and Luffy released her, simply looking at her.

"What do you want? You don't know anything. You don't know what's happened on this island for the past eight years," she said.

"No, I don't," he replied honestly.

"This has nothing to do with you. Didn't I tell you to leave this island?!"

"Yes, you did," he responded again.

"Leave! Leave! Leave! Leave! Leave!" She started grabbing dirt and throwing it behind her, her voice completely breaking.

"Leave…" Unable to hold it in anymore, she started crying, using all the strength she had left.

"Luffy… help me."

Luffy took off his straw hat and placed it on Nami's head, taking a deep breath before shouting to the world:

"OF COURSE!"

Nami cried again because, despite her betrayal, despite insulting them, despite calling their dreams childish, Luffy was still more than willing to help her. And at that moment, she remembered the first time she saw Luffy.

"Don't you dare touch my treasure!"

"Luffy…" Nami touched Luffy's hat.

Luffy walked toward where the rest of the crew was waiting.

"Let's go!"

"Yeah," the four of them answered in unison.

The five crew members headed straight for Arlong Park with the sole purpose of destroying it for making their Nakama cry.

Outside Arlong Park, all the citizens of Cocoyashi Village were trying to get in, but Johnny and Yosaku were blocking them.

"Move! We're going after Arlong and his crew!" one of the villagers shouted.

"We came to redeem ourselves for our Nami-Aneki, but we were defeated easily," Johnny told them.

"When we heard the truth in the forest, we realized how wrong we were about everything. Now we don't know how to face Nami-Aneki," Yosaku said.

"We're sorry, but we can't let you through. You don't stand a chance. You won't pass this gate."

"We have hope that some men will fight here."

"Some men?" Nojiko repeated.

At that moment, the entire crew arrived on the scene, bringing joy to Johnny and Yosaku.

Luffy reached the gate where everyone was gathered.

"Move!" Luffy shouted.

"Luffy-Aniki!"

Obeying him, Johnny and Yosaku stepped aside, allowing Luffy to deliver a powerful punch to the gate, cracking it before striking it again, completely shattering it.

"What's going on?!" Arlong asked, enraged.

"Who is Arlong?" Luffy asked, his fist ready.

It's better to watch that scene in the anime, it's a thousand times better than reading, and I feel like it didn't convey the same thing.
