Chapter 32
The next day arrived, marking the aftermath of Grey's battle with his familiar. He was already wide awake, seated on a stump outside the small cave where he and Randin had camped for the night.
Deep in thought, Grey absentmindedly ran his fingers through his hair, pulling a strand forward as he sighed.
"I know I planned to take down the Goblin Lord, and I'm not afraid of it. But how am I going to explain my hair color to Mum?"
A scoff echoed in his mind.
"Ha! What a baby," Noir sneered.
"Oh, you're awake," Grey said.
"Familiars do not sleep."
"Perfect," Grey muttered as he rose from the stump, stretching his limbs before striding toward a small clearing. "I need a favor."
"And what might that be?" Noir asked.
"You're strong, right? The strongest of familiars. You've fought against the otherworlders before, haven't you?"
"Of course," Noir replied, his voice laced with pride.
"Then be my sparring partner," Grey proposed. "Every day. I need to grow stronger if I'm going to defeat the otherworlders when they return. And since you've fought them before, you can help me gauge their power."
"And what exactly do I gain from this?" Noir questioned.
Grey smirked. "Think about it. You fought alongside your previous master against the otherworlders… and lost. You failed, and they died. But if you train with me, you'll slowly regain your lost strength. When the time comes, you'll have your chance for revenge."
Silence.
Then, Noir scoffed. "Let me think about it. No thanks, not interested."
"Great! Let's get started the... Wait… what?" Grey froze mid-step.
"I said I'm not interested. And I don't owe you a reason."
"Noir! Noir!" Grey called out, but the familiar had gone completely silent. His expression darkened. "Damn it. Useless pet."
Returning to the cave, Grey found Randin already awake, packing their bags and dismantling the camp.
"Oh, you're up before me?" Randin remarked.
"Yeah, just went for a quick stretch," Grey replied, then suddenly remembered something. "That crystal from the beast—what can it be turned into?"
He had considered absorbing it, but there was no mana essence within the core since the beast possessed no abilities. It was useless to him.
"It can be reforged into a pair of boots," Randin answered. "Since the beast was fast, the boots would enhance the wearer's speed."
"Perfect," Grey said, pleased.
With their preparations complete, the two set off once more, weaving through the dense woods in search of the Goblin Lord's hideout.
"How far are we from our destination?" Grey asked, using wind magic to propel himself forward as he kept pace with Randin, who sprinted at full speed.
"At this rate? Two days."
"Good. Because I'm starting to get sick of running," Grey thought, gritting his teeth as he pressed on.
---
For two grueling days, Grey and Randin journeyed through the wilderness—slaying beasts, enduring injuries, training, and camping beneath the stars.
At last, their efforts bore fruit.
Hidden within a small forest grove, they peered at a cave nestled within the rocky terrain. Goblins patrolled its entrance, their crude spears clutched tightly as they moved in a disciplined formation.
"The Goblin Lord and his elite squad are inside," Randin muttered. "Along with a hundred goblin soldiers."
Grey narrowed his eyes. "How do you know their exact numbers?"
"Because I tried attacking this place once," Randin admitted, his voice grim. "Alone. I failed—badly. The elite squad is no joke."
Grey arched a brow. "But the cave looks tiny. How can a hundred goblins fit in there?"
"You humans and your short-sightedness," Randin scoffed. "Ever heard the saying 'don't judge a book by its cover'? The entrance is deceptive. Inside, it's massive—large enough to house even two hundred goblins."
Grey smirked. "That means I'll have enough space to move around and cast my spells freely."
Randin glanced at the four goblins standing guard at the entrance. "So, how do we deal with them?"
"Like this!" Grey shot forward at blinding speed, extending his hand.
"Earth Magic: Earth Trap!"
The ground beneath the goblins shifted, locking their feet in place before they could react.
"Wind Magic: Wind Blades!"
Four razor-sharp gusts of wind sliced through the air, decapitating the goblins instantly—swift, precise, and utterly silent.
Emerging from the shadows, Randin inspected the aftermath. The goblins had perished before they even realized what was happening.
He exhaled sharply. "He's growing stronger with every passing moment. His ability to switch between elements is improving too. But…" Randin's mind wandered to a far more terrifying force—one he had witnessed firsthand. The leader of the otherworlders. The being who wore that accursed devil's mask. His power had been… monstrous.
A shudder ran down Randin's spine.
"What's wrong?" Grey asked, noticing his discomfort.
Randin shook his head. "It's nothing."
"Good!" Grey grinned, stepping toward the cave. "How about we go hunt some goblins and reclaim your planet?"
Randin's lips curled into a smirk. "I'll say this—let's do it!"
With that, he unsheathed his sword, his armor enveloping his body as the duo advanced toward the cave, ready to carve their way through the goblin horde.
