Chapter 33 - Tricky Situation

Chapter 33

"Good! So how about we go hunt some goblins down and reclaim your planet for you?" Grey smirked.

"I say we do it!" Randin grinned as he unsheathed his sword, his armor materializing around him.

They moved in silence, creeping into the cave, its open entrance allowing them to slip inside unnoticed. The interior matched its exterior in size, yet an imposing wall stood before them.

"Hold on... something's off. This is the place, I'm certain of it." Randin muttered, scanning the cave and the seemingly solid barrier.

"It's the right place." Grey affirmed, circling the cave with a scrutinizing gaze. "I've seen this type of spell before… I've even used it myself."

His mind raced. 'This is the same runic illusion spell I crafted in my own cave. How do these goblins know it? Are they working with a mage? Are the otherworlders mages? No... that seems unlikely.'

For now, his priority was breaking the spell. He needed to locate the magic circle powering the illusion.

"What are you looking for?" Randin asked.

"The ma—" Grey's words caught in his throat as he finally felt it—an undeniable surge of mana.

This spot has the highest mana concentration. He stood to the right of the entrance and swiftly performed a sequence of intricate hand signs.

"Illusion desperso!" He commanded, thrusting his hand forward. A gust of wind struck the concealed area, triggering a dazzling white glow as arcane symbols twisted and shifted across the ground.

The once-imposing wall groaned and shifted, revealing a passage.

"C'mon, let's go quickly!" Grey urged, propelling himself forward with wind magic. Randin followed closely behind.

The moment they crossed the threshold, Grey instinctively raised an earthen barrier to his left. A metallic clang rang out as something struck the wall. Dropping the shield, Grey retaliated instantly—launching a searing fireball at his would-be assailant, engulfing them in flames.

'That was a close call.' He exhaled sharply and surveyed his surroundings.

Just as Randin described, the cavern was vast, its space ample for combat. Fifty goblins stood before them, weapons drawn, their spears crackling with electric energy.

Grey's eyes flickered to the side—there, a heavy wooden door. That must lead to the goblin lord. The chamber was bathed in an eerie blue glow from scattered mana-infused crystals, their light blending with flickering torch flames.

The goblins wasted no time. In perfect unison, they unleashed a volley of lightning bolts.

"Earth magic! Earth Wall!" Grey bellowed. A massive wall erupted before him and Randin, shielding them from the attack.

'Good thing that they're too simple-minded to predict what comes next.' Grey smirked. 'Time to test my new Earth skill.' He raised his hands.

The wall shifted, stretching over the goblins like a looming canopy. Without hesitation, Grey extended his other hand.

"Fire magic!" A stream of flames erupted from his palm, encircling the goblins in a blazing perimeter. Their confused expressions amused him.

"Earth magic! Bind!" With a forceful downward motion, he commanded the stone to close in.

The goblins panicked, discharging erratic lightning bolts at the encroaching rock. It was futile. The earth swallowed them, merging with the flames in a perfect entrapment—forming a massive, airtight sphere.

Grey took a deep breath. "Explomb!"

The cavern trembled as a detonation erupted within the sphere. Flames consumed everything inside.

"Disperse!" Grey called, and the sphere crumbled into dust. When the smoke cleared, charred remains were all that remained of the fifty goblins.

Randin gaped at the destruction. "How strong are you?"

Grey scoffed, stepping forward. "Apparently not strong enough for my annoying familiar to think I need help."

'That sequence drained my mana, but being a two-star mage means I can handle it.' he thought with an inward sigh.

He halted before the wooden door where he suspected that the goblin lord and its elite squad were waiting for them, exhaling deeply.

"Allow me!" Randin stepped up, slicing the door apart with a single swing of his blade.

Grey drew his sword as they stepped inside.

"Oh? So I was right," Grey mused.

At the far end of the grand chamber sat a grotesquely muscular goblin upon a crude throne, a jagged crown atop its head. A dozen elite warriors flanked it, brandishing heavy swords and spears. Beyond them, another fifty goblins formed a tight phalanx, their weapons gleaming under the ambient blue glow.

Grey exhaled sharply, his grip tightening on his sword. "Well, this just got tricky."
