Chapter 10 - Affinity Retested

The guild was crowded as usual as Sin entered. This time again, he walked to where he could get his affinity tested.

He was slightly on edge since this was where he was last seen fleeing the scene. Thinking rationally, if he was the guy he punched, he would lurk around here to try and find him again.

Thankfully, apart from random Hunters sitting around, there didn't seem to be anyone wanting to tear out his guts with a stare.

After waiting in line, he arrived at the front where the same young lady from the day prior was waiting for him.

Her head leaned back slightly as she saw Sin, "Oh?" Her eyes widened with surprise, "You're back?"

"Yeah."

"To test your Spirit Energy affinity again? Do you know that it's impossible to increase your affinity, right? Your Spirit and Spirit Energy affinity are totally different things."

Sin paused, allowing the girl to continue saying her woes.

"A person can be born with a weak Spirit, a strong one, or none at all. But a Spirit Energy affinity is something alike to a potential that one has to not only control his or her Spirit goodly, but also the potential that they have to have a good Spirit. A good affinity means you most likely have a good Spirit, but even if that Spirit gets stronger in the future, it will stay the same affinity. For example, a B-Grade Spirit, even if it gets stronger in the future, will always have the potential of a B-Grade. It will not be able to surpass that no matter what... and you have no Spirit at all."

"Well, we will see about that. Just test me already."

"Alright..." The lady said, looking down with closed eyes, 'This boy... he just doesn't seem to understand. But I can't help but feel bad for him. He is like a baby crawling towards the fire because it is so bright, not understanding that the reality of the world is painful compared to your imaginations of it. I guess this will be akin to a learning lesson for him...'

Sin was thinking something totally different, 'From what she said, my current Spirit is of Common grade. I wonder what that means in terms of F to S grades for affinity. It all depends on the potential of my Spirit, right? Healing Bug... what is your potential? Probably not much, but I guess we will see.'

After hearing the conversation between Sin and this lady, a few curious eyes nearby darted over at the two. Some co-workers glanced over, loving some drama in their workplace since it was boring all the time.

Other Hunters sitting around couldn't help but eavesdrop as well, since that was human nature, after all.

"Please place your hand on this crystal and try to relax your arm."

Sin did just that, staring deep into the crystal.

Over a dozen eyes were peeking towards him from across the Spirit Energy affinity testing area. It was slightly intriguing to look at him for some reason.

What if he actually gets a good affinity all of a sudden? If it was just some average guy who was meant to get an average affinity, no one would bother.

But this guy was pathetic, it seemed. The lowest of the low when it came to Spirit Energy affinities. And that was exactly why it was more exciting to look at him.

Seeing a guy with nothing suddenly get something great, or anything at all, would be highly satisfying in a way, and also surprising as well. People naturally craved these thrills, so they subconsciously couldn't help but look over. As though they were looking at a car crash, hoping to see something that piqued their interest.

After 30 seconds, a white light began to shine from the crystal ball again. The lady behind the counter didn't have much of a reaction since this was what happened yesterday as well.

But then, her eyelids narrowed as she saw something in the orb. Her brows scrunched, her body leaning forward to inspect the orb.

A small tinge of gold light summoned in the center of the white, illuminating the white aura in a yellow hue.

The gold grew like a fast-spreading fungus, dominating the white light in an instant and flashing a blast of gold throughout the counter area.

The orb itself looked like complete solid gold. As if it was some sort of trophy for a football game or something.

And the light that shined off of it looked like golden rays of the Sun, blaringly obvious and blinding to look at.

Everyone who was staring at Sin's vicinity had to quickly look away and shield their eyes.

Sin was also surprised, his eyebrows furrowing inwards with confusion. He looked up at the lady, but she had fallen onto her bum it seemed.

She was so close to the light that when it suddenly flashed its golden rays, she was blinded--causing her to stumble backward.

"I... can't believe it!" She quickly rose to her feet, "A-Grade... you have an A-Grade Spirit Energy affinity!"

Sin heard multiple gasps behind him, followed by quick and quiet murmurs.

"Are you fucking serious?"

"A-Grade? Seriously?"

"That's... amazing."

"Woah, wasn't expecting that."

"From a random kid like him? Who is he?"

Sin smiled, 'Healing Bug... good job, buddy!' He nearly chuckled, taking his hand away from the orb.

"Is my Spirit Energy affinity in your records?" Sin asked the lady behind the counter, who was still gobsmacked.

Throughout her years of working at the Hunter's guild, there was nothing remotely close to being as unbelievable as this.

A person changing their Spirit Energy affinity was unheard of. It was like somehow naturally changing their skin color or genetic height. It shouldn't have been possible!

"Uh... it should be." The lady responded, her words a bit slow.

This prompted Sin to turn and walk away. His job here was done.

Everyone else was left shocked and speechless. But there wasn't a single person there that was unamused.

Since no one knew who Sin was, they didn't have a reason to feel anything like hatred or envy. They were just surprised by the sudden showing of power.

Without hesitating, Sin went to the counters at the back of the establishment.

This was where most of the normal affairs of Hunters were addressed. Sort of like a customer help area. Since he registered an affinity in the guild's system, he knew he could qualify for a Hunter exam now.

There were close to a dozen booths at the back of the guild, each one with its own guild representative.

Despite this, the lines were still long. Sin imagined most were Hunters, but the rest were probably people wanting to take Hunter's exams just like him.

Becoming a Hunter was something that had interested him for a while now. Of course, the main reason he wanted to test his affinity was to see if he had any chance at getting revenge. Or at least, to satisfy a calling for power in his mind.

With or without Spirit, Sin was going to get revenge. That wasn't a doubt in his mind.

However, he also wanted to become a Hunter. It was the perfect job for him, for what he wanted to do right now.

Exploring, getting stronger, and fighting--things he found interest in--all while getting money!? It was a done deal.

And of course, now that he knew becoming a Hunter was the best way for him to get to the Trinion Republic, it was even more of an obvious choice.

Due to his desire to be a Hunter, he had done as much research as he could during his travels. Although, he saved most of it for when he actually got to Solstar since he didn't want to slow his journey at all.

What he remembered most about his research on Hunters was unfortunately the Hunter exam itself, and how grueling of a process it was for most people.

Before even being allowed to start the exam, most people would have to wait on a waitlist queue for months on end.

There was no actual set date for exams, as there were simply so many people applying. This made quite the complicated process, where you had to come in every day hoping this was your day to finally do the exam.

Only select individuals would be allowed to do the exam faster. Sin didn't know the criteria in which people would get chosen, but he could imagine it had something to do with their background and Spirit Energy affinity.

Since his was A-Grade, he was slightly relieved on that front.

After half an hour or so, Sin finally arrived at the front of the line, where he was greeted by a young man in a white button-up shirt and red tie.

"Greetings! How may I assist you?"

"I would like to take the Hunter Exam."
