Chapter 7 - Checkmate

She was deliberately trying to infuriate Avril. She wanted Avril to lose her temper and embarrass herself. However, Avril seemed so calm and unperturbed, and she could almost see the disdain in Avril's eye. It was completely not what she expected!

"Avril, do you really mean that? Are you not upset at all?" Angie asked.

"Yes, I mean it sincerely. Very sincerely!"

Avril let out a sardonic smile. "A b*tch and a b*stard, what a perfect match! The both of you being together has saved many other young men and women from being tormented by you in a relationship. I am so happy because of this. How could I be upset at all?"

"What?!" Angie was outraged. She raised her hand, initiating a hard slap on Avril's pretty little cheek.

"I must rip your mouth off!" Angie yelled.

Before she could reach Avril's face, she was stopped by a forceful hand. She heard a man's cold voice saying, "Angie, do not push my limits!" Angie was stunned. She stared at the hand blocking her, and then looked up towards the man's face, It was a familiar one.

"Haider?"

"Why is he here? Did they really get married?"

Angie mustered some strength to escape his grip, while she looked at Avril with disdain, "Hmph! Here I was, thinking how high and mighty you were! However, you really got married to this loser on impulse?"

While holding her pained wrist, she rolled her eyes at Haider.

"Do you know who this guy is? He's a poor, lazy and unambitious man. All he does is sleep at home, and he doesn't even go to work! Why would you marry a man like this?" Angie said scornfully to Avril.

Pretending to be considerate, Angie was actually very delighted deep in her heart. Finally! Avril had married such a useless man. She could no longer compete with Angie. Angie would marry Jack, such a rich, successful young man, who was way better than Haider in all aspects.

Avril glanced at Angie indifferently, "I'm happy with my decision. Does that bother you?" Angie's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Even if you got dumped by your man, you don't have to deprave yourself, do you? Right now, you look as pathetic as a stray dog on the streets! What a pity!"

A hint of displeasure flashed in Haider's eyes. He was about to retort, but Lina rushed over immediately, her high heels going 'click-clack' loudly against the floor. She said respectfully, "Mr. Evans, since it's your first day here, would you like me to take you for a tour? I can bring you around so you are familiar with the office."

Lina came across the president here at the lobby, as the administrative director of the company, it was her duty to ensure he could familiarize with the company.

Haider stared deeply into Avril's eyes for a moment, however, she seemed to be pretending not to know him. So, he nodded and walked away to another area of the office. Lina smiled at Avril and rolled her eyes with disdain at Angie before she left.

She never liked Angie and felt that she was insincere and fake.

Angie was dumbstruck, looking at Haider's retreating figure. The expression on her face was one of utter shock.

"Haider... is the new president taking office today?!" She murmured.

This man had never paid for a meal on their previous dates! And yet he was the CEO of a top company in the country?

"Are you kidding me?" Angie thought.

Avril gave Angie a cold stare as she returned to her seat and got back to work.

"This nasty woman actually exposed her horrible true color just like that! Speaking to her made me feel disgusted!" Avril despised her in heart.

Angie stared at Haider's figure while gnashing her teeth. D*mn it! If she had known that Haider would become the president, she would not have broken up with him!

"No! I must snatch him back from Avril, he must be mine!" Angie thought viciously. 4:30 p.m., in the pantry.

Avril was waiting next to the coffee machine. Her mind was drifting as she held a cup of coffee in her hand.

Five minutes earlier, Haider had sent her a text message. He requested her to make him a cup of coffee.

As the secretary, she had to obey the president's order.

The freshly brewed coffee was ready. Avril held it carefully as she walked towards the president's office.

A person Avril did not want to see suddenly appeared and blocked her way. Avril looked up in displeasure, she sighed.

"Oh God, why is Angie here again?Such a nuisance!" Avril thought.

"Get out of my way!" Avril said, glaring at Angie coldly.

Angie approached Avril, staring at the cup of coffee in Avril's hand. There was a wicked look in her eyes as she said in a commanding tone, "Give me that cup!"

Angie clearly knew that Avril was using this cup of coffee as an excuse to get close to Haider and seduce him!

"Haider is mine! I won't let Avril come in my way!" she thought.

"What rights do you have to command me?" Avril moved around Angie and walked past her.

She was not trying to be a kind-hearted philanthropist here. She had put effort into making the coffee, so why should she casually pass it over to her rival?

"Haider is mine! That gives me the right to command you. You can't snatch him from me!" Angie said loudly as she chased after Avril, blocking her again.

"He deliberately agreed to marry you in front of me just to make me jealous! He wants me to come back to him!"

Avril was momentarily dumbstruck. No wonder why Haider did not berate Angie earlier! It was because he still had feelings for Angie!

"That does make sense. Angie has been dating him for at least a week, and he has only known me for less than a day." Avril thought.

"Well, I guess you're right. You can take the coffee to him then," Avril said.

Angie felt very smug and delighted. She reached out to grab the coffee from Avril's hand, but Avril dodged her hand and poured the coffee into the rubbish bin next to Angie instead.

"Why did you do that?!" Angie burst into anger.

"Why not?" Avril swept her hair in a mocking way.

"If you want to please the president, by all means, make your own cup of coffee! I'm not that kind-hearted to let you take credit for my efforts!"

Then, she flashed a beautiful smile at Angie, turned around, and left.

Angie angrily walked back to the coffee machine.

"Avril Chris! Just wait and see! When I get Haider back, the first thing I would do is to make him fire you!"

At that moment, she had completely forgotten about her fiancé, Jack Normandy.

Avril happily whistled her way back to her seat. Shaming Angie actually brought her so much joy!

In less than five minutes, she received a text from Haider. "Come to my office."
