Lyra continued to stare out the window, watching until Linda disappeared from sight, leaving only Cassian's back facing her.
She wasn't supposed to linger, yet she couldn't retreat either. As if sensing her gaze, Cassian finally turned.
Lyra's breath caught in her throat, a flicker of surprise flashing across her eyes.
There was something cynical in those piercing blue depths, something that froze her in place. No matter how desperately she wanted to look away, she couldn't.
"My lady, there's good news!" Penny's excited voice jolted Lyra out of her trance, and she snapped her head toward her maid.
Confusion clouded her features as Penny ran up to her, a triumphant smile lighting up her face. But Lyra wasn't eager. Her attention immediately flickered back to the window only to find Cassian gone.
And just like that, her curiosity vanished.
