The initially tense Chloe Grant, waiting for an answer, suddenly felt the string in her heart snap. She was somewhat dumbfounded, unsure how to respond to Lucas Morgan's answer.
"Last night when I returned to my room, I saw you hiding under the bed, so I pulled you out. Then I took a call and didn't bother with you after that," Lucas explained the events of yesterday simply.
"No, that's not right." Chloe Grant quickly shook her head, lifting her head again to look at Lucas's face, "Last night I clearly saw two people come in. One of them was you, who spoke with me, and there was another person!"
As Chloe Grant spoke with conviction, she kept her gaze fixed on Lucas's face, trying to discern if he was lying from his expression.
But no matter how hard she tried, Lucas's face was somewhat blurry, and she couldn't make out the detailed expressions.
"How bad is your night blindness? Are you telling me you saw someone else in the room? Chloe Grant, are you kidding?" Lucas was somewhat exasperated and amused.
"No." Chloe quickly shook her head and insisted, "I saw two pairs of shoes before the lights went out."
She was anxious and shouted again, "Are you deliberately hiding something from me? Also, it was you who left last night with another person. Be honest with me."
"I'll say it again, only I entered the room last night, and after receiving a message from Lily, I left. I only came back with Lily after ten at night and spent the night on the sofa. If you need evidence, I can have Lily come out."
Lucas explained again seriously.
Chloe still didn't believe him.
If the truth was truly that cruel, that Lucas left and went to pick up Lily, and then they spent the night together on the sofa.
Then what about her?
The man who spent the whole night with her in bed, was he a freaking ghost?
"Do you have to lie to me?" Chloe stared at Lucas, tears of grievance already in her eyes.
She finally believed that when something happens, there's no most devastating, only more devastating.
Bad things always get worse and never change for the better.
"I'm not lying to you, the fact is just that," Lucas replied straightforwardly, then repeated, "And it makes no sense to keep talking about this."
Lucas shifted his body, and as he turned to the side, the road light that was blocked by him suddenly shone through.
It was too sudden and stung Chloe's eyes a bit. She hastily raised her hand to block it.
Lucas reached out to rub Chloe's head, "When my brother comes out I'll have him take you home, also..."
He paused, lowered his hand, bowed his head for several seconds, then sighed and looked up, "I admit I was too protective of Lily today. But you also made some mistakes, so let's just pretend nothing happened, okay?"
Chloe still had her hand covering her eyes, but couldn't control the flood of tears.
Nothing happened.
Such simple words.
Last night, today's dinner.
For Chloe Grant, it was the heaviest blow of her life, and he wanted her to pretend nothing happened?
Was he joking?
"I'll take Lily back first," Lucas said as he lowered his hand.
He turned and walked around the front of the car, and as he reached the driver's seat and opened the door, he couldn't help but glance back at Chloe standing over there.
He sighed helplessly.
He wasn't sure if something unpleasant happened to Chloe yesterday.
But...
That person from last night, he couldn't tell Chloe.
Just like he couldn't tell her why he suddenly left three years ago.
The reason he suddenly appeared in the room last night, Lucas couldn't say either!
