Chapter 2 - Her background

Hayley sat next to her uncle in the living room. "Listen, Hayley," Uncle Andrew began, his voice low and mysterious, as they sat in the cozy living room surrounded by warm, golden light streaming through the windows. "What I'm about to tell you is something you mustn't share with anyone."

Hayley nodded, her eyes wide with curiosity, wondering what he was about to say.

"I am a werewolf," Uncle Andrew said, his expression serious, his eyes gleaming with a hint of supernatural intensity.

Hayley's eyes widened further, and she chuckled, a nervous laugh that betrayed her growing unease. "Uncle, this isn't a joking matter. Be serious, please."

Uncle Andrew's lips thinned, his face set in a determined expression. "I am very serious about this. Werewolves are supernatural creatures that move in packs and have the ability to shift into their human form at any time."

"But..." Hayley cut him off, her voice laced with skepticism.

"Listen, Hayley, I know you have questions, but I want you to understand this: you are a special type of werewolf," Uncle Andrew explained, his eyes locked onto hers, his voice filled with a sense of urgency. "That's why you haven't changed or shifted yet, and I personally don't know when yours will happen. It is my duty to take care of you, and that's why we have to leave this place and go to another."

"But, Uncle, you're not even explaining it in a way that I can understand," Hayley said, growing annoyed, her voice rising in frustration.

"And can you explain why I'm just finding out now? I have a million questions to ask. You haven't even explained properly, and then you're telling me that we have to leave here and go to another place?"

He sighed and exhaled deeply, his shoulders sagging under the weight of his secrets. "It wasn't my place to tell you."

"Then whose place was it?" she yelled, her voice echoing through the room.

"I can't tell you that, Hayley."

"You never tell me anything. Even my own parents... I have no idea how they died. You just vaguely told me they did, and you're my uncle, who's supposed to take care of me, with no explanations about other family members."

She said sadly, her voice cracking with emotion, "It's fine, Uncle Andrew. I won't bother you, but it's so crazy how my world changed so fast with just one encounter in the woods. And besides, who were those wolves that attacked me? And I don't even know the one that saved me. Were they also werewolves or normal wild wolves?"

Uncle Andrew paused, a deep line etched in his heart, his eyes clouding over with a mixture of sadness and concern. "They were werewolves. You smell like many werewolves. Two in particular, though... I can't distinguish, but I know for a fact that they were werewolves. That's why I was panicked when you first came in."

"So, Uncle, our families are werewolves?" Hayley asked, her voice filled with a mix of curiosity and trepidation.

"Something like that," Uncle Andrew replied vaguely, his eyes darting away from hers.

Hayley noticed his evasiveness but said nothing, her eyes dropping to the floor. With her head down, she added, "Why haven't I shifted yet?"

Uncle Andrew turned to her, his expression softening. "To be honest, I don't know. Most werewolves are said to have their first shift when they are teenagers, but... you feel strange or weird anytime, do well to inform me."

"Okay, Uncle," Hayley said passively, her voice barely above a whisper.

Then her face brightened as she remembered the good news she wanted to share with her uncle that morning, but he was still asleep. So she began, "Uncle, another reason we can't change scenery completely is because I just got accepted as an intern in the marketing department at the Peters Organization."

She cheered happily, her face radiant with excitement, a wide smile spreading across her face.

Uncle Andrew's face brightened as he smiled and said, "Congratulations, my child! That's such great news, and I'm so proud of you. But at least, even though we can't move out of New York since you now work here, but at least let's move out of this house for your own safety, as it's too close to the woods where you were attacked."

"Okay, Uncle," Hayley agreed, her voice filled with a sense of resignation.

Uncle Andrew owned a food shop nearby, but it could be reopened anywhere else. As it was already noon, Hayley decided to take a nap after the dramatic events that had transpired that day.

While Uncle left his house to go into the woods, his whereabouts unknown.
