Chapter 4 - CHAPTER 4

Nate POV

Days later, Detective Rhymes and I went through the information he gathered on Victor Langston. We made a drawing board with an organogram displayed in the living room. With Victor pinned on top with threads linking all his lieutenants and other foot soldiers below. We scanned through the faces to pick out the weakest link.

After many hours of pondering, detective rhymes finally picked out one of the pictures underneath. "Danny Brooks." He had a scurvy facial look on his mugshot. Rhymes had a broad smile on his face like he just had an epiphany.

"This our ticket in." He said with conviction. He placed the photo on the table. He told me how he arrested him years back for illegal gambling. Even after his release, he still had an addiction and owed different loan sharks money.

"Let me tell you how we can get him-." He whispered in my ears how we can hook him. I grinned after he was done. We nodded in sync and headed out.

We went to his last known address. We found a spot to hide out and observe the surrounding environment. Moments later, we saw two burly men kicking and dragging Danny brooks on the pavement.

"You loser, we will break your leg today-" One of the burly men sneered at him. They continued kicking him till he spat out blood. Just as they held his leg down to stamp on his knee, I quickly jumped in and pushed one of them away. The other man was taken aback, he snapped back instantly.

"What are you doing kid? This doesn't concern you." He replied, the second who fell stood with a murderous intent in his eyes.

"If you don't scram, your fate will be worse than this fool."

"Wanna bet-" I curved my lips slightly. Before they made any move, I appeared behind them suddenly.

Thud! Thud!

I drop kicked both of them as they fell on the ground wailing.

Crack! Crack!

I stamped their knees as it made bone crushing sounds.

"My leg!" They both screamed out in excruciating pain. I had a wry smile as I glanced at them grimaced.

"Don't come back here ever again or you'll be sorry." They both sluggishly stood up and dragged their feet, wimping as they limped off.

"Thank you kid, you just saved my life. I thought my time was up." Danny cupped my hands vigorously.

"How can I ever repay you?" He asked in enthusiastic tone.

"Actually…I was just released from prison. So I'm looking for a job." Danny's eyes widened with joy. Rhymes already told me Danny was also an ex-convict. So, hearing the word 'prison' Danny's eyes flickered with joy.

"Your luck has just changed bud." Danny replied with an aura of confidence. "I"ll take you to my Boss for an introduction. His the most powerful man in this city."

He started telling me how powerful his boss was after I told him. I quickly signaled to Rhymes discreetly that the plan is working as we continued walking. Rhymes nodded in agreement and he headed home.

Danny took me to a local bar at the dangerous area in the city. We went to the back room where a man in an exquisite suit lurked in the shadows sitting down, while a burly man with a tattoo on his face sat on the edge of the table.

He had a sinister look on his face as he gazed intently at me.

"Who's your little friend, Danny?" The tattoo man posed as an henchman asked. Danny wiped the sweat beaded on his forehead as he averted his gaze.

"His name is…Nate. He was just released from prison. He has a good head on his shoulders." Danny nervously replied.

"I will be judge of that."

"Nate is that you?" A man in the fancy suit leaned forward into the light. He has a smug on his face. I met his gaze and he had the exact features of Victor langston.

Danny shuddered hearing Victor's voice. He gasped as he glanced at me. What are the odds he brought someone his Boss already knows.

"Yes it's me." I answered in a calm tone. Victor stood up and approached me. The tattoo henchman's eyes widened in shock.

"Isn't he the useless son-in-law who stole from Miss Harper? He's truly shameless."

Victor smirked while striding towards me. I clenched my fists and I met his gaze. "I met Danny by accident while looking around for a job." I said in a respectful tone.

Victor stood inches from me sizing me up. A wave of anger washed over me as I restrained myself not to punch his smug face. You will get what's due to you Victor. I thought to myself.

"You have to prove to me that your loyal first." Victor grinned while glancing at me. His expression revealed doubt in me.

I remained unfazed as I gazed at him. "What if I can bring a profitable contract?" I asked in a polite tone. I already knew Victor can't say no to a good deal.

"If you can get a deal worth 100 million in three days, then I will accept you in my organization." Victor replied while seething at me.

The whole room lit up at the mention of '100 million.' This their yearly profit. So how will just an ex-convict get it in three days. Some of his men whispered to themselves.

I could tell he was setting me up to fail, however that amount is just a pin drop from my total assets.

"I accept." I replied while meeting his gaze. Victor was taken aback but snapped back quickly. Everyone watched us like audience of a boxing match. Danny had a fearful look on his face.
