My men returned to me when the sun was already going down and they didn't have much to say to me.
But I wasn't satisfied with how they handled the whole matter. I had something to complain about. "You could have waited for her to give you a reasonable reply before leaving."
"Sir, we didn't want to make a scene or attract attention. Those were your orders," Tom said
"Were they?" I asked them. I had even forgotten I said anything like that.
"Yes, sir," James said. "She had guards around her."
"Why would she have guards around her?"
"We have no idea. But when we saw them, we knew that there were people following her around. Watching her."
It seemed that my brother, Ryker, was up to something. Why would he have guards following someone who had once been my slave?
Or was he protecting her? From who? Or from what?
