Chapter 5 - Divorce

"Are you sure that you want to divorce?" the officer asked Mia and Henry.

"Yes," Mia agreed, causing Henry to turn and look at her with confusion in his eyes. Lips pursed, he turned to look at the man behind the counter and nodded before saying, "Yes, we do."

The officer looked at the two of them and took the divorce agreement that held their signatures and nodded. The officer remarked, "All in order. Now the divorce proceedings have been completed and since you have refused the cooling-off period, I will be handing you your divorce decree."

Hearing the words of the officer, Mia curled her lips. Henry was really in a hurry; he arranged everything. Maybe he was worried that she would one day regret the divorce and thus dealt with all the formalities.

The officer handed the two of them their divorce decrees.

'It's over?' Henry looked at the divorce decree and was quite surprised when he saw how smooth the entire process was without the woman in front of him causing even the slightest bit of fuss.

He raised his head and his gaze cut to Mia, who was stepping down the stairs; his fingers tightened around the divorce decree and he called after her, "You should take the house that I gave you. No matter how we got married, you were still my wife; this is the least I can do—"

For some reason, he wanted to know where Mia was and where she was living. Henry could feel that the answer was within his reach but every time he reached out his hand to grasp it, the answer would disappear just like a bubble when touched with the tips of his fingers.

"No, thank you, Mister Holman." Mia wheeled around and looked at the man with a calm expression. "When I changed the divorce agreement, I was completely conscious and aware of what I was doing. I do not need any further entanglement with you; thus, there is no need for you to show any kind of kindness to me."

She paused and added, "I have sent my resignation letter to your email; make sure to approve of it."

She then turned around and walked away without showing any signs of weakness. Mia believed that this was the least she deserved after all the pleading and chasing that she had done in the past few months.

Her gaze drifted to the divorce decree that she was holding and her eyes turned watery. With this, the ill-fated relationship between her and Henry had come to an end. She hoped that she would never see Henry again.

"You are not leaving, Mia!"

Mia sighed as she shoved the pasta on her plate to one side with the fork. She knew that Taryn would go ballistic the second her friend found out that she wanted to leave Ashmoor City and settle down in Saltspire.

"It's not as bad as you think it sounds." Mia raised a calming hand and wanted to explain her decision but that only made Taryn even more furious. She threw the napkin that was on her lap and snapped harshly, "What do you mean by its not that bad? You have a life here in Ashmoor. Why would you want to leave it all behind for a dumbass?"

Mia was really thankful that the restaurant where Taryn brought her was playing a hard rock metal song or else everyone in the cafe would have known that she was dumped by her husband.

"I am not leaving Ashmoor because of Henry." Mia reached out and held Taryn's hand. She said to her, "You know that I always wanted to go to Saltspire. It's a beautiful city by the seaside, and you have to admit that it's better than this concrete forest."

"Then what about me, hmm? Am I not worthy of you staying here or your dad?"

Ah, here it was—the emotional blackmail routine that she had been waiting for.

"Dad said that he will head over to Saltspire once he is done finalizing the cast for the new movie," stated Mia before adding swiftly. "And if you are my friend, then I am sure you will be willing to haul your bag to Saltspire."

With a little snarl, Taryn stabbed the butter knife in the table as she snapped, "I blame Henry and that bitch for this. I swear I will make them pay even if it's the last thing I do. I promise that I will get my hands on something; once I do, I am making sure all the news channels broadcast it!"
