Chapter 1 - Chapter 0-Prologue

The sight was unlike anything Kairo had seen before. A swordsman fighting off some sort of undead beast. Its faceless head and gnarled, decaying body froze Kairo where he was standing. Even with a sword, the swordsman was struggling to fight it.

"W-What in the world is this?!"

Six hours earlier

Lying on his desk, Kairo finds himself bored and nearly drooling over his textbook as the teacher continues teaching mathematics.

As Kairo began drifting off, faint ruler-slapping sounds could be heard being slapped against the chalkboard. But as Kairo started drifting further asleep, a sudden whoosh sound filled the air as a flying eraser drilled into Kairo's head.

Shooting his head off his desk and causing him to jerk back into his chair abruptly. As his head slowly leans forward, his eyes adjust from being shaky. He notices a chalk eraser on his desk.

"So you finally decided to come back to the land of the living!" Angerly shouted the teacher.

"Maybe you can solve this problem since you seem so bored with this class!" The teacher slaps his ruler against the chalkboard.

Quickly Kairo stands up and looks at the chalkboard before scrunching his face up in irritated confusion.

"There's not a damn thing on that chalkboard! You old geezer!" Kairo shouts as he picks up the chalk eraser and launches it like an arrow straight at the teacher.

The teacher is in shock as the chalk eraser hits the board and causes a white cloud of chalk dust. As the teacher coughs and shoos it away, he notices Kairo is nowhere in sight.

"That damned brat!" The teacher angrily gritted his teeth as the class looked at each other in concern.

Outside the school building during school hours

"Aw, man... I did it again." Kairo sighed as he continued walking away from the school with his hands behind his head.

"Nasaki really needs to stop rubbing off on me..." Kairo sighed even heavier as he slouched forward. His backpack was hanging low on his back.

As Kairo continued walking, he found himself bored with everything, regardless of what he did. Unsure if he'd ever find something like enjoyment again.

While walking, Kairo would see neighbor kids having fun on the playground and families walking together, laughing and enjoying themselves. Kairo leaned back and looked up at the sky.

"I wonder if Sis is home yet." Kairo thought as he continued walking home.

Entering Neru residence

As Kairo walks inside, he quickly slides his shoes off. He instantly notices the lights were still off and his shoes were the only ones at the door.

"That'd be a nope. Guess I'm making myself food again." Kairo sighs once again as he walks into the living room and tosses his backpack onto the couch. Immediately walking to the kitchen.

Photos of Kairo's family were displayed on shelves within the living room; they were pictures of Nasaki and Kairo's mom and dad. As well as them as kids and babies. As Kairo pulls a drink out of the fridge, he looks over at one of the photos and gives it a side-eye stare. While he's taking a drink.

After droning around the room with his eyes, Kairo looks back into the fridge to see if there was anything to eat. While prodding through the fridge, the front door is heard being opened.

"Kairo, I'm home! You better not be in the bathroom!" Nasaki shouted as she took her shoes off at the entrance, her tone dull and exhausted.

"I'm in the kitchen!" He shouted back while still looking through the fridge.

"I'm not cooking tonight, so find something." Her disgruntled tone shifting as she drudges her way past the living room and up the stairs.

"Was already on it... Just get some rest, Sis." Kairo whispered as he feared his sister would hear him.

With one last look, Kairo decided nothing in the fridge looked good to him, and he closed it. Causing him to look back over at the pictures again. But this time he decided to walk over to it and pick one of them up. As he held it up, he looked at it sadly but also felt anger mixed in with his sadness.

"Where did you guys go..." Kairo whispered while holding the picture frame.

Their parents names were Catarina and Sazo Neru. They both worked as traveling writers, which is why they'd leave for trips a lot.

Nasaki Neru was the older of the two, but a few years after Kairo's birth. They instructed Nasaki to look after Kairo for a bit as they had to leave for a critical trip. Nasaki was only eleven back then, but she did all she could as she patiently waited for their parents to return.

Yet time passed; at first it was days, then it moved to weeks, then months, then years. Eventually they never returned, and Nasaki was left all alone with Kairo.

"It's only thanks to her that we managed to make it this far. She works hard and never has any time for herself. I'd never say it to her face. But she truly is the best sister anyone could ever ask for." Kairo said to himself as he gently smiled while looking at the younger Nasaki smiling in the picture frame.

"KAIIIIIROOO!!!"

Suddenly heavy-sounding footsteps came barreling down the stairs as Nasaki barged into the living room soaking wet and in a towel. Her face and the energy around her were radiating angrily.

"Did you skip school?!" YOU, YOU... DELINQUENT!" Nasaki raises her wet fist at Kairo as she's ready to send him to the grave.

"N-Now Nasaki, please, let's just wait and talk this—!" Kairo whined as Nasaki continued getting closer, her eyes carrying a fire in them. She was ready to pounce and deliver a nasty disciplining blow to Kairo.

Kairo quickly tries to step back but ends up bumping into the table. As he jolts his head to see if anything was about to fall over, he quickly looks back at Nasaki.

Nasaki leaped at Kairo the moment he looked back, and from outside the house a loud scream could be heard as she delivered a powerful blow to Kairo.

"I'M SORRY!!!!" Kairo screamed as Nasaki delivered more brutal punches.
