Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Working Towards Something

Three weeks later.

I've been training for the last three weeks with all different types of fighting methods that Lucy knew about. None of it is easy to learn but I'm definitely feeling a bit more confident in my fighting skills.

She's also been teaching me about the different types of magic that people will try to use against someone like me if they know I'm not magic capable. It's insane to think they need all these different types of magic when we possess none.

But the battle between magic users is also pretty intense sometimes too so I'm kind of glad I'm not one. I'll happily become the strongest magus known in this world without the ability to use it.

I have something to work towards now so I have no reason to mess around, there can only be room for improvement. If I don't get stronger than I won't learn of this artifacts location that Lucy was telling me about.

Mason continues to train with Lucy for the remainder of the day before heading back to his room. He is working on a device of his own, one that can work as both an offensive and defensive contraption.

She provided me with all sorts of tools to work on things myself so I will definitely work to make something great. Everything she taught me both fighting wise and about magic helps a lot.

This device will help me if I encounter someone with magic who has the intent to kill me.

He continues to tinker with the device for quite a few hours before writing notes down. It was a back and forth process for quite awhile before he finally finished the first phase.

"How is it coming along?" Lucy asks with a bit of curiosity in her voice.

He lifts it up and looks towards her. "The infused crystal you gave me is definitely what I needed. This thing will come in handy. I'll be able to hold my ground at the very least against a lower ranking mage." Mason answers while his eyes remained on the device.

I have to come up with a name for this device but I know it'll be handy against low ranking mages. It'll take quite a bit of trial and error to figure out how to make it stronger but this will have to do for now.

I'm fighting a war against magic users by myself basically, but at least it's not all magic users since people like Lucy do exist in this world. Not every person agrees with this stance against us but I'm glad to have her on my side.

"You really do take his genes huh. He was always tinkering with stuff when he visited me too, I'm glad though. You gave me hope for our world." Lucy speaks with a bit of relief in her voice.

I'm young but I definitely have quite the journey ahead of me if I'm going to change the world for the better.

Days continue to pass as Mason learns more about the devices his dad made in the past, discovering these things from his dad's old journals that Lucy managed to grab.

It was a struggle for him to do all of this after all the years he spent with them since it was so new to him but he didn't want to fail now.

Time keeps flying by with Lucy as I train and learn more things but I've also learned that she is pretty young. Elf's have a different life expectancy than us but I'm glad to know she's not too much older than me.

There's a lot of different races out there as well so I need to learn about them as much as possible too.

It's been a boring few weeks for me lately but I'm glad that all of this knowledge will help me reach my goal in life. Lucy also thinks I'm just about ready to head for the location of the artifact she mentioned.

It apparently has a huge amount of power stored within it that can help me become a force to be reckoned with.

Lucy enters his room and extends her hand out with a map in it. "This is for you. It's actually not crazy far from here so just follow the path I highlighted for you and it'll be okay." Lucy instructs with a positive tone in her voice.

Was it really time for me to do this already? Did I really reach a point in which she believes I'm ready for this journey finally?

Mason takes the map and grabs his bag. "Thank you Lucy. I'm sure I'll be back soon enough." Mason responds.

She also pulls out a set of robes combined with a special cloak that was handmade for him. "This is also for you. It'll help in a lot of ways I promise." Lucy assures him as she hands it over.

"Thank you again." Mason replies with kindness in his voice.

With his new set of clothes, a map, and his own device made, it was time for him to venture towards this location. Only there would he find this powerful artifact that could help him become even stronger.

He left her treehouse and made his way down a pathway leading into the woods, it didn't appear to be dangerous but he remained cautious nonetheless.

I didn't know what to expect since I've never traveled before, especially not on my own so this was definitely going to be a new experience for me to handle. I've gone through a lot of training in my life so this has to be enough for now.

Maybe if I'm lucky I'll find more people willing to join me on this journey but it's not guaranteed or anything.

He traveled for quite awhile before finally stumbling upon a strange looking cave but this was indeed the cave Lucy mentioned. It looked exactly like how it did on the map, a strange skull like design.

"Inside I go." Mason says softly to himself.

He ventured into the cave and began to notice all the strange cracks and openings in the walls. Mason didn't hesitate to have his sword drawn the whole time while occasionally running into monsters in the cave.

Even though he's never killed before he read the notes on the map that told him not to hesitate against the monsters. They would kill him without any issues.

So I've run into goblins, skeletons, and even some weird insect things in this damn cave but I haven't found this so called artifact. I'm not really sure what I'm looking for just yet so that doesn't help.

I'm surprised I managed to kill any of those monsters since I didn't fight them before but I guess training with the right people will help with that. Dad was extremely skilled but I wasn't at his level, if I was, that assassin would've lost.

I definitely need to sit down for a bit though, it's kind of exhausting to travel through a cave.

After resting for awhile and taking some notes down about the cave, he continued back on his journey through the cave. Even without the slightest clue about this object, he knew it had to be here somewhere.

Two more hours go by and he finally reaches a huge opening with a giant cube like chamber ahead of him. The door is massive and torches seem to be lit up all around it.

Well if this doesn't scream that an artifact is here, than I don't know what would. There's only one way to find out so it's time for me to check out the doors.

I could see all the different symbols on the door but none of them made any sense to me here. Maybe if I just try pushing on the door something might happen here.

Push. Push. He began to push against the door for a few moments before he finally noticed that they were actually starting to open up.

I guess I didn't need to know anything about the symbols after all, time to see what awaits me on the other side here. I've come here for an artifact after all.

As the door fully opened he could see a girl chained up in the distance, her curly long pink hair was the most noticeable thing about her and her wings, she appeared to be unconscious and wearing some sort of noble clothing too.

Why the hell would there be some random girl here? Don't tell me that she's potentially the so called artifact here, I don't think someone can be the artifact in question.

I don't really know what I should do here, maybe it'd be best to turn around since I'm not looking for a person. Then again that's not the type of person I am so freeing her would be the best thing to do before leaving.

Blink. Blink. The girl had opened her eyes and was staring right at Mason, her dark red eyes were locked on him.

"Who are you...?" She asks weakly.
